Good evening
Just came home from a 6 month deployment expecting to start up my old honda and drive her off.
It's an '89 with 226k, and the infamous a20a1.

I noticed a few things. When I try turning it over and it does end up starting, it seems to "sneeze" then die down. Also, when hitting the gas pedal to keep it running (when it does run, that's the only thing that keeps her going) it sputters.

Any idea where I should start diagnosing?

after 6 months, you've probably got a carb full of stale fuel or fuel gum.
the jets could quite likely be clogged up.
you'll need to run some carb cleaner through it, put some fresh fuel in the tank and clean and gap the plugs.
if you can drain the float bowl, do that and put some nice fresh gas in through the float bowl vent and leave it for a day to help soften up the gum before you try it again

Are there any obvious symptoms to stale fuel? I just went outside to start it, it's starting kind of hard, and it doesn't stay running very long.

The fuel itself should be fine, I think hauntd is correct. Just need to give the carb a good cleaning.
