Ive heard that in japan their emissions are really strict and that once an engine hits 30K miles, they need to replace it.

So they have all these low klage engines in a warehouse somewhere...

is this true?

My cousin lived in Japan for like 6 years or something and said that after about 45k-60k they had to either replace the engine or pay a higher tax. The tax is usually realy expensive over time so it is sometimes cheaper to get a new engine. The other thing is unlike in the US when a car gets older usually the insurance gets cheaper (not classic cars) but in japan they make you pay more for older model cars.

thats why most of the swaps that are jspec engines have about 30 k on them.

They don't get new engines to often. And it's not the emmissions but the inspections that are strict. What happens is they have to go through "sha-ken" (which means vehicle inspections) every few years and each time they do that, it gets more expensive to get it done since it's older and they have to pay for a bunch of repairs that need to be made to get a pass which is more frequent and costly on an older car. So after a while, it's better to just trade in their old car and buy a new car. That's also why something like a 2nd gen Integra with an expired sha-ken sells for only $1000US even if it's fully loaded and with what we consider super low mileage.

Or they sell those cars as refurbished cars to other asian countries.

True true. I was in japan a few years back and I rode around in a brand new toyota and I haven't even seen anything like it on this side of the globe. Someone should invest in a really big boat and fetch us some cars!!! lol

<EDIT> oh wait nevermind it would be very weird driving a japanese car... so maybe just fetch the engines!!
