I decided I should do something about rust in that area. See the attached photo. I used a dremel and ground some rust out of the crevice created by the joint between the fender and the gas opening back plate. I'm thinking of filling in that crevice, a low canal where water can lay, with body filler to eliminate the water-catch situation. What do you think?

Sounds good to me. Do it and then post lots of pics.

There are liquid fuel tank lining products available for motorcycles with rusty interiors. They come as kits, or you can remove the tank and take it to someone who can do this for you.

The issue is the rust at the bottom of the opening covered by the door which conceals the gas cap.

I will post some photos after I get this done.

OK, ... some photos:

Partially done with body filler:

After some sanding of the edge around the opening, ... my crude masking to paint:

Painting done:

Obviously, I have not mastered blending and my masking left some noticeable paint lines. But, I think I can declare mission accomplished. Maybe I can re-do some painting on the fender around the gas opening next spring or summer.
