I came across these 1"x1½"x12 CREE LED 12v breadboards the other day and purchased 6 of them. I'm going to mount them behind the reverse light lenses. Each board puts out a hell of a bunch of light.
I'm converting these lights because the stock 1156 put out ok lighting for me but it's not bright enough in my opinion. I want to be able to see everything with copious amounts of light. These will help me in doing so. I'll post pictures soon. In the mean time, here's what they look like. I'm still stuck at the dispatch center for a few more hours.

where did you get them, how much were they etc? I wanted to increase the brightness but I was worried about heat, this is a good solution, I also have the euro front turn signal lenses, the ones with the separate parking lamp, the light output on them is pathetic, this is the perfect solution for them

This IS the solution you're looking for. I now have spectacular lighting when backing. The new lights light up so brightly i can see about 30 feet behind me and around 10 feet beside each side of the car. I just wired them into the stock harness.
These are the LEDss after i stuck them to what holds them in place and together. The plastic backing piece is made of an old license i had. Something good and sturdy, yet strong.

Pretty simple to pull out the inner tail light assembly. 3 nuts on each one hold it to the trunk lid.

This is the backing of the assembly. The reverse light spot can be found at the top.

This is the 1156 LED bulb i was using before. It put out pitiful lighting because the lights are aimed upward and not out.

This is before the conversion with the older 1156 bulb i had in. Not too bright...

This is what it looks light now.

These next 3 pictures are the end result. Let there be light, and copious amounts of it too. :)

Well worth it. Lost, it cost me $3.50 each

Just arguing semantics here, but that's not a breadboard. This is a breadboard:

Also, incans produce light in every direction. They don't have to be pointed head on, especially when there's a reflector behind them. That's why the drop-in LED bulbs are typically a very poor choice.

the hatch is a lot different as far as the reverse lights, I already have a set of tails apart, it has the square plate that sits in the red lens, this should work fine though
