View Full Version : Tach reads too high

The tachometer on my '89 SE-i Coupe 5-sp always reads too high. When warmed up, the idle reads about 1200 RPM when the actual speed is 500-700. At freeway speeds, it seems to be about 1000 RPM too high. These figures have been verified by two different shops.

This car is new-to-me. I have no idea what the previous owners might have done. Any ideas?

Thanks, Cap

if it idles at 1200, you may want to turn it down a little.
when did you buy this car?

This tach does not read the true engine RPM.

The tach indicates the actual engine RPM PLUS an additional, erroneous, 500-1000 RPM.

My question is, what would make the tach reading false?

i dunno but a 5 inch monstar tach with external shift light is only 100 bux at Jegs or Summit! hook one up.

it maybe cause someone or the previou owner might have taken it out and when the put the tach back in the needle was off. Try changing just the tach from the junk, just try it, u dont have to buy it like try fixiing it and see if it does the same. I don tknow any junk yard u know would do it, but the somerset wreckers and recyling (junkyard attached) that i go to. the dude always allows me to test it before i get it.

The tach reads 0 when the engine is not running.

In 5th, at 70mph, it reads about 4000.

No, the clutch is not slipping.

When getting the emmissions checked, the mechanic noted the the tach was not properly calibrated. Later, when getting a tuneup, a different mechanic noted that the tach was not properly calibrated.

How does one correct the calibration of a 3g Accord tachometer?
