View Full Version : My car will Idle low then shut off ??

Hi I have an 86 Accord LX with a Carb engine and automatic transmission. I never had this problem until I put in a brand new Air Filter. But after it was installed I noticed that my car started idling funny and would then shut off suddenly. It would always start back up immediately but anytime I was driving and came to a stop or really even slowed down, the idle would drop really low and shut off. See but if I keep my foot on the gas, it would stay running.

Some people said it was a Vacuum Hose leak others said one of my sensors were bad? But after I had someone look it over, we noticed that when we messed with the hose that connects from the Exhaust Manifold to the Air Filter, that it would stop idling low and then pick and Idle at a steady pace without shutting off. Put that hose back on, give a lil gas and it would shut right off again. So it had me thinking it had to be this hose.

Problem is no Auto parts stores in my area carry what I needed. I'm not even sure what the proper name for this hose is.

So does this sound familiar to anyone? Or from what I described, does it sound like I'm overlooking something? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

it sounds like you knocked one of the vacuume hoses off on the bottom of the air filter, the hose you are talking about is the carb heat hose, the air door thats supposed to mix air in there to keep a steady temp, is probably not working ,the diaphragm above it is normally bad, if it is, the diaphragm twists to unlock it, from the air cleaner, and you unhook the little arm on the door. they are hard to find good, but I'm sure someone has a good one here somewhere

it's the 89 manual, but it's the same info on the carburetor air door mix system http://geminiwebhosting.ca/1989AccordServiceManual.pdf

You can only slightly see the hose in this image, I left the hose in my friends' car after going to 3 different auto part stores. But yeah I only started having these problems when I replaced the Air Filter about a month ago. Since then the car sat in my garage for awhile. I had my Radiator replaced along with Spark plugs and oil over the past few days. The car seemed to run fine as I took it for a 10 minute test drive after letting it warm up for a good 15 minutes. I made sure to come to a few complete stops and everything was going fine until I pulled back into my driveway and before I could even put it in Park, it idled low and shut off again. That's when we started tampering with the hose i'm describing, and the idle went right back to where it should be.

if the thermostatic vacuum control for the heat door isnt working, the carb will get nothing but hot air from the manifold, this can cause the issues you are having. normally cold and hot air are mixed to keep the intake air temp the same
