Finally get to start working on my hatch. This will be a long, slow going build as I am currently unemployed.

Things to do:
1. Rebuild engine
2. 5-speed swap
3. Poly bushings all around
4. Paint/restore/replace exterior trim
5. Get seats reupholstered
6. Replace crumbly dash with less crumbly dash
7. I don't know yet. But I'm sure I'll find something else i want to do.

This is my new dd while the hatch is down.

Got most of the auto interior stuff removed today. One last bolt holding the shifter assembly on. Have to remove the exhaust before i can get to it.

Think I found my front left vibration problem. Or at least part of it.
5861
Radius rod is loose.

Don't think I will be lowering it... ever...
5862
Found grass, dirt, and rocks in several places.
5863
Hard to tell from the pic but oil pan is dented in about 3/4 inch on the bottom.

Several other dents and scraps on bottom of car. Think i need some stiffer struts and springs.

Finally got around to pulling the motor.

Not much room to work with. Would have been much easier if I had some help to. But I made due with what I had.

Got a bunch of the parts ordered.
Full engine rebuild kit including pistons
dc header from nswst8
unorthodox flywheel from military mase
exedy clutch kit
full set of prothane bushings
magnaflow catalytic converter

And before I could order the rest my water heater decided it was going to rust through and flood the basement... Just my luck...

deff is gangster you got it in ur basement! I would love to have that done here. but nice work on getting the motor pulled. you just doing a frest oem rebuild or you going to do something fancy?

VIPER1988
02-11-2014, 05:46 AM
oem with this one. Hopefully next year I will be able to get started on the other. Other motor will still be n/a but will have every performance part I can find on it. Only things this one is getting are dc header, cai, lightweight flywheel, and basic rebuild. And doing 5 speed swap while I have it out. I would save the flywheel for the other motor, but its the only one I have.

Go figure. I need a new radiator. One I have was bought from Honda in 2004 with a lifetime warranty. "Sorry, that part has been discontinued. We can't exchange it for you."

Finally back at it. Rebuilt the motor. Forgot to take pics in the process. Its just about ready to go back in. Still need a few things. Unfortunately the project is being cut short. Wife gave the 91 4door to her dad. So i have to get this back on the road asap. Going to finish the motor rebuild and 5speed swap for now. Everything else will have to wait.

Got more done today. Put wire harness and rest of accessories on the motor, removed and cleaned front suspension parts, and got most of the dash back in. Will add pics tomorrow. Wish i could find a dash thats not so brittle. Cracked in several places. Most wont be noticeable once everything is in. But still... Cant do any more until i get some $. Need nut for radius rod, 2 exhaust manifold studs, old bushings pressed out of lca, bolts for flywheel and pressure plate, starter, and rear mount bracket for manual trans. (Left mine in Florida:uh:)

I haven't done it, but would plastic welding work?

Hazwan

If done properly, plastic welding should be as strong as it was before

VIPER1988
07-21-2014, 02:37 PM
Tried plastic model glue. Guy at the hobby shop said it melts the plastic together. Letting it dry over night. Suppose i will find out tomorrow how strong it is. Went to Fastenal and got most of the nuts and bolts i need. Only things they didn't have were the flywheel bolts and the nut for the radius rod. Friday i will be Checking the Pullapart for the rest of the stuff i need.

VIPER1988
07-22-2014, 04:15 PM
Well the model glue seems to be working well. Loaded glove box with tools and opened and closed it several times. Didn't break. Replaced all the front bushing with Prothane. Strangest thing with the suspension. Everything on passenger side was tightened proper and the bushings were in fairly good condition considering age. Driver side everything was loose and the bushings were pretty much gone. What would cause such a drastic difference from one side to the other? Removed 2/3 broken exhaust manifold studs. Third one the extractor broke off inside of...:rocket: Tried drilling it out to retap it. But because of the extractor piece stuck in it the drill bit wouldn't stay centered. So hopefully it won't leak. I don't have money for another head right now.

Just realized that i never posted my brake and interior updates from a year or 2 ago. Did rear disk swap with EBC goldline rotors and green stuff pads all around. Went to the pullapart. Got rear mount bracket and flywheel bolts. Installed unorthodox flywheel and exedy clutch, mounted transmission, installed alt. and dropped it all back in the car. Exchanged passenger axle under warranty. Still need starter, driver cv axle, battery, and all fluids. Hopefully next week she will be back on the road.

what brand carpet, andhow was the fit?

VIPER1988
07-26-2014, 11:06 AM
Don't remember the brand. Will have to find the receipt. The mold they used didn't have the ducts that run down under the seats. Little work with a heat gun fixed that. Other than that, the rest fit perfect. I got it with their "mass backing" option. Helped a lot with road noise. Its a lot thicker and heavier than factory.

I dont have the underseat heat ducts, so no big deal, auto carpet originals went out of business or something

None of the holes are cut out and all of the edges are too long and have to be trimmed. But it fits quite well. I got the ultra plush with the mass backing. They will also send you samples so you can see/feel the difference and match colors.

it was missing the blue plastic edge clips right? I saved my old ones because I figured an aftermarket carpet would have them missing, and the holes missing is great as so much is different on mine anyway

my back seats are unusable for anything but kids now anyway, with the battery box on one side and the vacuum tank on the other, now I know what those holes in the seat frames are for, forgot the lxi has vents to the back, they would make nice wire runs if I could find some

Finally back on the road. Trans is a little rough. Hopefully its from sitting dry for the past 5 years and will smooth out as I drive it more. Pgm-fi came on with code 12. Will not idle if A/c is on. So I still have a bit of tinkering to do. But it made it to and from town (15 miles each way) with no major issues. Basement seems huge without the car in it lol.

Not sure if someone wants to add this to the 5speed swap how to. But, I didn't have to ground the pink wire for cruise to work. I had a plug dangling under the dash already for the clutch switch. Plugged that in and cruise works as its supposed to. Turns off with brake or clutch.

Got a few more things done. Replaced one of the small coolant hoses on the intake(had a pin hole in it), replaced egr valve(still get code 12)(Solved, clogged vacuum chamber), and adjusted the idle. Still likes to die at idle with a/c on sometimes. Not as bad as it was tho. Next I need to track down a battery draw. Brand new Diehard gold battery goes dead after 2 days of sitting.

check the auto tensioners for the seatbelts in the doors, you have the doors with the belts hanging off them right? the pre tensioner solenoids end up staying on and killing the battery, common problem

Thanks for the info. My seat belts are in the pillars tho. Not the doors. Have to find a new fuse for my multimeter before I can check anything.

Guess I must have left a door open or something. Battery hasn't died on me again. Still haven't figured out why a/c causes it to die at idle. An old knee injury is making it difficult and painful to drive the 5speed. So unfortunately I will be putting the auto box back in. All the 5speed parts will be for sale after the swap is done. Will make a separate thread with pics.

Dr_Snooz

Well that sucks. The upside is that the 3g autos are great transmissions. They are very responsive and almost psychic about knowing what you'll want them to do. You really have to be a die-hard purist to justify a swap.

I've always preferred manual trans. 8 out of 11 cars I've owned have been manual. About 2 years ago I slipped off a metal roof and ripped my left knee down to the bone. Highway driving isn't bad, but the stop and go traffic in town gets painful. I need to have the auto trans rebuilt at some point. Leaks at case seams and the shifts are on the slow side. Not half bad for 356k miles.

I just finished working on a steep pitch metal roof today. As I sat up there, I war-gamed how I would ride it down should I fall off. The house is surrounded by pine needles, so the landing would be okay. The ride down, over sharp bolts, was much less okay. Thank god I finished before reading your post.

Haven't been on here in a while. Been Busy. Both kids in school (off for summer now), new job, new car... Put about 13k miles on the 3gee since the engine rebuild. Runs like a champ. Shes been moved to "Project on hold" status. lol. Will be a few years before I can afford to do anything.

New car is paid off now. Hopefully i will be able to resume work on the hatch pretty soon. In between jobs atm. First order of business will prob be pads and rotors all around. Sitting outside for 2 years hasn't been kind to them. I still drive it occasionally. Has antique plate now so I'm restricted to weekends, holidays, and car shows. Brought my parts car up from Florida finally. if anyone needs any parts that are easy to ship from an 87 hatch let me know.

Every day is a car show when driving it. And any day is a holiday when driving an 87 hatch since our cars are extremely rare to see and when you see one its like a holiday. Lol. Wow your state is super restrictive to driving car with an antique plate.
