View Full Version : Bad motor mounts?

Rear and side mounts are pretty easy to tell. Mine are not ripped and still feel firm. But how can you tell if the front liquid filled mount is bad? Was getting a lot of vibration at idle before I pulled the motor. Especially when a/c is on. Bushings in the 'torque strut' were loose and sloppy. So that may have been the vibration problem. But I would like to check them all while I have the motor out.

If memory serves, the front mount is the hydraulic one. It has a thin rubber cover over it. If you lift the cover, you should be able to inspect it. If you see cracked rubber or a lot of oil, it's time to replace it. Of course, since you have the motor out, simply replace them as a maintenance item.

Unfortunately I can't afford to replace them all. Driver side one has already been replaced. Rear one seems to be in good shape. I def need new bushings for the torque strut. Will try to pull the rubber cover off the front one tomorrow and check it.

Everyone always thinks that (including me) because they are so sloppy. Unfortunately, the new ones will be just as sloppy and the dog bone never really does anything except under full throttle anyway. In hindsight, I'd ignore the dog bone mounts unless they are actually crumbling away. It's your car though.

They are crumbling. Pretty much all that's left is a small amount of the center. Would it make any difference if I put poly bushings in it? Or should I stick with factory replacements? Haven't had a chance to check the front mount yet. Got a thoracic sprain spreading 12 tons of gravel across my driveway.

somewhere around here I have one of the FI front mounts almost new, they only sell one mount for carbs now, even though the FI one is too tall, so I have a FI mount when I ordered one for a carb. it will fit a FI motor fine, but if you have a carb, you need the FI bracket, or one of the adapters to use the energy suspension mount
