So for the last few years I've been driving an older Integra. 1990 to be exact. I like it, but I needed a 4 door, plus I must admit I'm an Accord fanboy. So, I've been looking for a 3rd gen for about a year now and can't find one close and the two days ago I had a 4th gen practically given to me that needs serious engine work. Do you guys know a good forum for 4th gen help? I've looked, but can't find one with a lot of active users. Are there any guys on 3geez with 4th gens that can help me or point me in the right direction? I basically want to get this car going as a DD until I can find another 3rd gen, hopefully an 89 Se-i :naughty: Thanks in advance guys, Lew

Ive gone over to cb7 but it seems to be a pretty dead site. There are a few active users on there, but it's nothing compared to 3geez and it's not very user friendly with the search option. Maybe I don't know enough about the 4th gen and F22 to know what to search, but it seems to me that everybody on the site has or wants to swap engines and trans. Not that is necessarily a bad thing, just not what I'm looking to do. The how to/DIY section is definitely lacking.

What is wrong with the engine?

Well, I don't know exactly. With the valve cover off I can see the cam is broken. The oil in the pan looks good, which leads me to believe oil pump went out. but I'm not sure. I trying to decide between tearing the engine apart and seeing if I can rebuild it, or pulling the engine and putting in another good running F22.

If the camshaft is snapped I would bet money that engine is ruined. Save yourself the headache and swap it

I never found that site very useful either and I've been there a number of times for issues with my 4g. Nor have I found any site that's better. 3geez is rare with its knowledge base and dedication.

If someone gave me another 4g and a fistfull of dollars, I'd pass. The car is a real disappointment, which is probably why the users over at CB7tuner aren't very passionate. It's a plain vanilla car; a me-too Camry; something Honda put together well enough to get Soichiro out of their hair so they could go to work building genuinely awful cars. The users all want to swap because the F22 is a terrible engine. It puts out mediocre power, is overly complicated, fragile and gets terrible mileage. There's no good reason to keep it. No one knows how to fix them because it's not worth the bother.

I'm also needing to rebuild my engine. I'd like to do it cheaply, but there aren't any used JDM engines anymore. I don't trust junkyard engines, so it's a full rebuild for me, which will cost around $2k. That's a lot of money for an underwhelming car.

In your situation, you can probably get a junkyard cam for a few dollars. Swap it in and cross your fingers. If it runs, be happy. If not, sell the thing for scrap. It's not worth a rebuild. Seriously. I think Blue Book is $1,600, so you'll be wildly upside down from day one if you rebuild. Oh, and that F22 engine has all the balance shaft jazz going on. That means two different cam belts and a lot of extra hassle installing them. If you don't have the manual, you'll want it. I have an electronic copy you can have. Just PM me if you're interested. I tried to wing the timing belt and ended up with a tow bill and an expensive repair. :( Honestly, everything on the car is like that. It's just a big PITA with no redeeming value.

Good luck with your project and better luck finding another 3g.

Snooz, that's a good looking coupe!!! I do hope I find a 3rd gen soon. I really don't want to swap in a more expensive Prelude engine, plus I don't really have the time to do it. I don't know I guess I might try a junkyard cam and see if it works first. I'm going to PM you Snooz, because if it runs with a different cam I'l have to do the oil pump and timing belt. I have a feeling there's going to be more to it than just that though.

I woundnt fix a broke cam 4th gen this day in time, but if I did I'd expect to buy an entire head.

I'm probably just going to drop an engine in. I really don't want to do anything to a 4th gen, but I can't find a 3g. I've been looking for a year and need a four door. I've got two kids I haul everywhere. I really enjoy my Integra with the B18, but finding one that is affordable in a 4 door is out of the question and trying to find said 4 door in a 5 speed around here, forget about it. I don't know what the deal is with 3gs, I was finding them all day long for $500 or less 3 years ago. I'm guessing they've all been getting crushed, since that seems to be the MO of people around here when they can't figure out why there car isn't running, or that it will be too expensive to fix, or need money for meth. lol So, until I find another 3rd gen I'll have to live with the CB7. I'm trying to figure out now if I want to go H23 or F22. I've found both semi-locally for around $500. The H23 has around 200k and is already in a 4th gen and the F22 has 119k and is pulled. What do you guys think?

Put the F22 in and then sell it for a 3g. Get a carb 4 door and do the Weber swap. Compared to a FI conversion, an MT swap will be relatively simple. Then you have a car you really like.

Post pics of the 4g too.

I found a F22 at a junkyard here for $400. The other F22 is 4+hours away with 119k. Asked the guy to do a compression test and it was 180 all for cylinders. Now, I'm debating the $400 190k engine here that has the 30 day guarantee or the 119k with god compression.

Dr_Snooz

Excellent compression...if he isn't jiving you. Is this engine in the car or on a shelf? If it's on a shelf, then I'd be calling BS.

It doesn't look as good, condition wise, as the 92 so keep that in mind. That and the fact that I haven't attempted to clean it yet. I'll post some pics as soon as I get back tonight.

It took me forever to get pics off my phone. Ended up having to download the photobucket app. Anyway, here it is in all its 291k glory. Obviously uncared for and the only thing I was able to see that had been done to it is a shitty paint job, oh and the custom center caps. lmao She's definitely got a long way to go, but she's exactly what I was looking for with an added bonus of a functioning sunroof. This is exactly how I received the car and drove it home (it only took a little over a quarter tank of gas and four quarts of oil to get her here).

Notice the rubber duckie? It came with the car. I find it interesting that the 92 LX also came with a rubber duckie. What's up with that?

I actually gave up looking and bought a cb7, then a week later I got a call about this one. I went the 250 miles give or take, looked at it, told the guy I wouldn't pay $700 (he was asking $1200) for it, got in my car started driving home, he called and said "what would you give me for it". I told him $400, he said $500, and I said deal. I honestly didn't think it would make the drive back. lol

It's really a hit and miss. I see nice ones that are out of my price range. Then I see ones that people want way too much and won't come down on the price. I want to find a deal like you did.

I hear ya. People get crazy ridiculous on pricing. A few years back I was finding 3rd gens all day long for $500 or less. Hell I paid $250 for the one in my signature, but then I did a FI swap and lowered it. I regret selling that car everyday. I wasn't finding anything at all though when I bought the 92. Then right after I bought it I found a pretty clean LX auto, but they wanted $1100 and it had two thing going against it imo #1 it was carbed and #2 it was auto. This car sorta found me and I'm not going to turn down a 3rd gen having the exact options I want and being straight for $500, no matter how cheap and crappy the paint job is and how bad it's using oil. And WTF is up with painting those centers orange? Man the stupid stuff people do amazes me. On the plus side, I'm thinking it may not need to be reringed. It's only smoking when I first start it and when I down shift, so I'm thinking maybe valve seals and an oil leak somewhere, but idk. Now I gotta sell this 92 to have money to put in the 89, I also listed my teg, because I don't need a 2 door and would sink every dime I make into the 3rd gen.

LewZur
04-07-2014, 08:08 PM
You know I think a big part of the pricing is that these cars are now considered classics, that and the price of scrap metal has been way up (here anyway) and I've seen countless cars being pulled over the scales. A lot of cars that made me sad to see them going to the crusher. I know back when I built the blue Accord in my sig, there were at least 10 3rd gens at my local pick and pull. Now there is one. I know I said I didn't need a 2 door anymore, but I will probably not pass up the opportunity to buy a coupe or hatch if said opportunity presents itself to me.

It's a 1990. I won't lie, I love that car. I looked for a four door in that generation with either a bad motor or trans, but could never find one. That's the second dohc engine I've owned, the other was a 93 Prelude Si, and to be perfectly honest, I prefer the teg. But, unfortunately life has me in a situation where a 2 door is impractical for me, and the teg needs some money put into it. It needs struts all the way around, ball joints and other suspension stuff, but it still runs great and I've been happy with it for over two years. I hate the rims that are on it, but I'm thinking since they have brand new 80k mile tires, they're going on the 89. Idk I'll test fit them this weekend and see if I like them. If only I could find somw fat fives or swirlies.
