Why does the how-to on adjusting valves

http://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107

say to adjust your intake to .005 - .007 and your exhuast to .010 - .012. but the label on the underside of yourhood on your car says .012 - .015.

is the vavle clearences on the how-to for performace grined camshafts? or a typo?

If it's a typo, the same typo exists in the service manual. The specs are right, I used them. Never looked at the label, .012 - .015 seems a little loose IMO.

I use 6 dor intake and 7 for exhaust and I alaways do it after the engine has been sitting for a night so it is damn cold.

I my self have a question about these valves.. god damn things.. strip easily...
i already replaced 2 of them... iv'e adjusted 2x...

Still haven't got it right.. knocks still
slightly... I know it's from up top..

Would it be bad to replace all the adjustment screws and nuts on all the valves ? or would that throw things off slightly? I don't think it would be a problem.. anyone?

wow I've never seen .012 to .015 under the hood.

Repacing screws is not a problem. and getting new nuts is a good idea. I've used some poor quality 12mm wrenches that won't hold the nut firm when loosening, so you may also want to make sure your wrench is in good shape.

In the tune up section of my Chiltons manual it says "If the specifications on the tune-up or emission label in the engine compartment of your Honda disagree with the 'Tune-Up Specifications' chart in this section, the figures on the sticker must be used. The sticker often reflects changes made during the production run". So I guess you should probably do whatever it says on the sticker. Remember, Haynes and Chiltons are sometimes wrong all together too. Mr. Honda always knows best, heh ;)

I never noticed that on the sticker before, so I always set them to what it said in the book. I usually set intake @ .15mm and exhaust @ .27mm. Guess I'll try it with the specs on the sticker

Ah, the good ol' valve clearance specs. Honda screwed up on this when they first made the 3gee with the PGM-FI system. They have different specs between carbed and efi. They just never bothered telling anyone. I'm pretty sure the efi are more open than the carbed, but I forget. But when I do adjust valves on a 3gee efi, its .010 on the intake, and .012 on the exhaust. Make sure the valves are cold, and take out the spark plugs to make life easier when going onto the next cylinder. Hope that helps clear some things up.

Question:

If I turn the crank w/ a wrench bout a quarter of a turn... will the car start afterwards?

Thanks,

guys when in doubt keep the bigger values=looser valves because if the valves are too tight you can burn them, use the sticker on the underside of the hood
