    has anyone boosted a b20?

I just purchased my Accord LX and I from what i've read on here and from the sources ive found, we can swap a b20 in our car. now, since i am a speed freak and all that jazz i wanna swap a b20 in there and boost it. has anyone done it before? and found excellent results? and by excellent i mean by like a normal boosted civic with 500 hp results? I'd like to see pictures of these cars aswell.

Make sure its the JDM B20. The ones you find in the US from Ludes won't fit.

that's also the wrong engine for an easy swap

JDM B20A from the 2G Prelude or 3G Accord is what you need

Re: has anyone boosted a b20?

yeah man there's a difference between the 3G Prelude B20(tilts back instead of forward)/CRV B20(OBD1=headache)/JDM Accord and Prelude B20(hard to find manual transmissions/parts for) motors. very easy to get the wrong one so be careful. good luck.

if you have the money/time/know-how, build and boost your A20.

The engine/transmission from a 3rd gen prelude is not compatible with the B20A engine found in the JDM 3rd gen Accord and 2nd gen Prelude sorry. You can't use that.

The engine is not rare, but the problem is they were never released to the US market. They are mainly JDM and EUDM, with the majority of the JDM ones being automatic.

Re: has anyone boosted a b20?

I was kinda the test dummy on the turbo b20a and i spent a lot of money doing so. But my end result before i blew it up was around 300whp@17PSI (not dyno proven) but coming from my tuner that has hundreds of tunes/dynos under his belt. I had a lot of issues but it was a learning experience and i now know a lot about it and have confidence next time around will be better.

However if you want to get 500hp like a newer b-series i will say dont bother doing the jdm b20a. Dollar for dollar you will get better results with the newer b i think. One big reason is because they have a wider rpm range. I think my last setup with a bigger turbo/injectors could push 350hp judging the fact that similar prelude b20a5's are getting those numbers and our b20a has higher numbers stock. One issue i had was the gearing is real short so i want to work on the tranny and upgrade my turbo. I could forsee better numbers with higher boost but i don't want to blow anymore motors and im looking for a stable turbo motor.

My end result hopefully will be mid 3's for hp but i have over 15k in this and if your not experienced and cant do a lot of the work yourself costs will only go higher. I could obviously do it a lot cheaper now that i went through trial and error but quality parts cost money and boost is not forgiving and you can ruin a motor in a second.

Just a little of my imput being one of the few to turbo a b20a.

I would think so if my stock subaru legacy does it in a 14.1 at 243hp. I am leaning on making it more of a track car than my plans prior. I never have run the quarter mile but i would like to get into racing more for a leisure hobby plus i have been racking up wreckless driving tickets and connecticut's police force is only growing on top of the countless unmarked cars.

I hope to start building my block over this winter and slowely assemble it over the next year or so.

alright, you seem a bit lost. there's three different engines that people could mean when they say the ambiguous "b20." the most likely would be the b20z from the cr-v. 126 hp, 131 tq i believe were the numbers for that little machine. that engine is part of the "b-series" engine family including b16a, b16b, b18a1, b18b, b18c1, b18c5. it readily accepts a vtec head with little modifications and uses the same engine mounts, parts, transmissions, etc. as the aforementioned b-series family engines. this engine will not bolt straight into a 3rd gen accord, however, you can see if you find any b-series placeracing mounts and axles or can do it yourself.

next possible "b20" and what most people would mean when saying "b20a" would be the b20a5 from the 1988-1991 prelude. i don't know the power numbers on this one, but i do know it will not bolt in either. however, it's not part of the b-series engine family. the transmissions won't swap over, the mounts won't work, the vtec heads won't fit. it's essentially a dead engine. and becareful when ordering from japan for a b20a. because while it was coded b20a5 here in america, it was simply coded b20a in japan. but it will also not bolt into a 3rd gen, and would probably actually be more work than a normal b-series engine due to it's angle in the bay. there's also a sohc b20a for the prelude, i believe it was coded b20a3. same mounting situation as b20a5, and you can make more power with your a20a1 with the money it'd take to swap that over.

this then brings us to the b20a we all talk about around here. this b20a was available from 1984-1989 in the 2g preludes then the 3g accords. it made 160 hp in jdm form, 144(?) in edm form. this engine will not really swap parts with the 3g prelude b20a5 motor family. it will swap parts with the b18a (130 hp carbed motor for non-us 3g accords), but not with the b20a5 engines from the 3g preludes. parts like pistons, valve cover, and lsd from regular b-series engines will work on b20a bolt-in, but you can't do vtec headswap, the whole tranny won't bolt up, etc. other parts work with a little bit of modding. do your research. both of the b18a from 3g accord and b20a from 3g accord/2g prelude will bolt right into a 3g accord (just uses different rear/tranny mount from a20a1/3), you just have to do a few wiring tricks. it's been discovered that you can even use an a20a transmission on either engine as long as you use the b18a bellhousing. also, a20a1/3 use same intake manifold as b20a. so in theory, if you don't want to convert your car to run efi, you could even use your a20a1 carbs, although they will probably starve your engine.
