Possibly a stupid question...

Ok this is a newbie question...

Dont get the wrong idea, but... My 88' Accord LX has around 185,000 miles on it. I've done a good bit of work on the head(plus a new with new head gasket. Cam and valves are stock), its been shaved a little(because it had to be). New plugs, flipped lid, rest is stock.

Will anything happen if i try to reach the max speeds? I mean shifting at redline and then flooring it till it redlines at around 120(?). Will that do any damage, or even excessive wear and tear on this old engine? I would like to be able to drive it till at least 210,000 miles. I wont be doing it often.

What about gunning it, for example not shifting till redline? I never drive like this, well mainly because i was afraid of 'blowing' my engine.

Any advice?

These engines put up with everything we throw at it, except for a couple people that try new things to make more hp and blow it. Not naming any names though. It won't hurt it if you try to max it out though.

is to your wallet for speeding..but please check tires before going for max speeds

its good to redline your engine every once in a while, it helps burn out possible carbon build-ups. just make sure that your oil doesn't ever get too dirty, that could accelerate wear..

i drive that way every day, lol, and i've never had any problems. our engines usually last well into the 200K miles. mine has 219k, it might've rolled over to 220K miles today, im' not sure, but it's way close to doing so if it hasn't yet.

dude regular tune ups and oil changes...you can try firin bullets at hte engine and it still wouldnt get damaged.....

oh i make sure i never have carbon build-ups :pimp:

you guys wanna hear a car with alot of mileage, mine has 271K and its still runnin like a champ

Before you get near redline make sure the car is warmed up, and dont go too much into the redline either

I agree they take abuse, my old carbed engine had 350,000km on it before it finnaly died, and I carried it to redline often. Now hopefully my new one will take as much shit and abuse, So far it is.:)

just going to redline shouldn't hurt it because the reason the redline is there is to be a measurment of roughly how much the engine can take before damage occurs. but like you said, don;t make a habit of it.

the engine will deal well with the "abuse". It's not atually abuse b/c you're not hurting anything (in the engine at least.)

but like njpeter said, and many "speeders" always forget to take into consideration, please for the love of everything holy, please check ur tires. Also, remember ur engine is bulletproof, but at speeds of 100+ you never know what a stock 200Kmi. suspension can be doing.

my 88lxi has 250k and i run it hard every day. i also drive
300 miles towork every week going at least 80.the only problem
i had was my hood opened goin 80 and smashed my windsheild
and sun roof.so allways check ur hood.

hood fly ups normally result in a major crash or rollover..a very lucky break..good ide to check both the hood latch AND the safty catch if you routinely drive at high speeds

your tires might be inflated corrctly, but that doesn't mean they can handle the speed. tires are speed rated which means that they are only garaunteed to perform correctly up to a certain predetermined speed. i bet the tires you have aren't even garaunteed up to 100. be careful.

i've pushed my car to 110mph on spiked snows.. the only thing that happened was the loudest tire humm i've ever heard. then again they were at reccomended PSI and i do have a new suspension system.. make sure you do check that out.. 100+ on a soupy suspension can cause a date with a guard rail.
I reccomend checking your balljoints before tackling this too, granted mine are new, but i've seen cars with old ones where just driving down the road causes them to fail. you dont want your wheels looking like the flying DElorian in Back To the Future two screaming down the road at 100+.

also... very important to those with AUTOS... DON'T ABUSE THEM!!!.. pushing a stock auto over 100k to redline more than a few times can lead to MAJOR problems (ie, Bands, CLutch Packs, and general sludge from the old filter circulating back into the system. ) But, those with 5speeds can let em rip.

I drive that way every day, so far nothing major. I've never gotten a ticket either. For example, I did about 90 to 100 on the freeway yesterday for miles and I was fine. Just be sure you can handle driving at high speeds, and make sure you have both hands on the wheel. Don't ghetto ride it and be like "Word G I got one hand on the wheel."
