Newbie Carb Question
Help!
I'm new to the forum (just found out about it), and have problems with my accord :( :
Symptoms: It is very hard to start right now and requires me pumping the throttle to get it started and keep it started. It spits out some smoke until it gets warmed up, but once warmed up it works as well as it always has (although there is some hesitation now when I punch the throttle). Seems like it is running really rich until it is warmed up (even then it seems rich).
1st question:
My mechanic says it is a carb, which would sound about right on a car with as many miles as I have (217k). Would you all agree?
2nd question:
How difficult is the carb to remove and install on our cars? I have only worked with FI in the past, and not on Hondas, so I am a little intimidated, but it is right on top of the engine and seems to be easy to access.
3rd question:
Is a rebuild kit from something like autozone a good buy, or would I be better off with another vendor? I am a bit short on cash, so replacing it with a performance carb (while ideal) is not an option.
Any help would be great!!

same problem here. the engines on these cars last forever but im not sure the carb was built to do the same. mine won't idle and runs kind of rough. could a bad (or lack there of) oxygen sensor have any effect on it?

get a carb rebuild kit, do a tune up, and check the PCV valve... or just replace it... what color is the smoke? if its blue, your engine needs some internal repair

mine smokes on start because of valve seals or something around there.

if your car smoke when it is cold, but it doesn't smoke when the engine is hot than it is your valve guides.
you will have to take the cylinder head out and take it to machine shop.
i have the same problem, it is smokes when my engine is cold, but it stops when it is hot. i am gonna just swap the cylinder head from a good engine.
about carburetor, i bought rebuild kit from autozone and i am happy with it.
make sure you get carb cleaner too.

Thanks everyone! I ordered my rebuild kit from autozone today, and it will come in tomorrow, so I will work on the rebuild this week and weekend.
As for the valve seats, there may be some head damage, but I figure I will see how much the carb helps before I take that step.
I recently replaced the PCV valve so it's not that, but I didn't think about the oxygen sensor, and will pick one up when I pick up the kit tomorrow.
I will let you all know how it goes!

i don't think that Carbed cars have an O2 sensor ?? !
anyway how is your choke when cold ? open ? closed?

Mike, yes my car came with one.
i thought that bad idle was because of bad O2 sensor. i was wrong.

Advice: Don't buy a new carb. Just rebuild it.
