out of the 4 3gs i've owned, on 2 of them the arm of the combination switch was broken. (the arm on the left of the collum)
thats a 50/50 chance of it snaping in my experience...
how about you guys? have you ever had a 3g that this arm was broken on?

Mine never broke. The headlight switch messed up after 14 years and 308k miles, but that's it.
When I bought my 89 it had a broken combo switch for the headlights! I tried to patch it up and it held for a while but I ended up having to go to the junkyard to get a "new" one..
Yep, Left arm broke on mine.

Yea my right arm is broken. I tried fixing it with some crazy glue and duct tape and it's holding alright...for now.

I actually had the wiper control arm break. I took apart the combo switch and fixed it by epoxying the cover back on the spring and rigging it. (hard to explain) Anyway, it has held for seven years so far.
Mine isn't broken, but I can't get my hi-beams to come on. No biggie, at least until my next inspection.
still over 50%... any other votes?
My combo switch took a dive and the headlights wouldn't turn on so I went to the junkyard and got one for $10 and put it in about an hour and a half. (drinking :) )
its not poor enginerring bro, its just the repeated usage and after 14 years, its expected. U can just change the arm, and not the whole unit if u ask me.
come on smufie, if the switch arm doesnt hold up when its used as it was designed to be used, then its poor engineering.. they should have made it out of a stronger material.
what do u suggest to be a stronger material? How many times people use those levers? Imagine in 14 years how many drivers drive that one single car. PVC is something that deteriorates in time and its natural. It all depends on the severity of use.
For example, most of the users here have their electric antenna mast either bent of the cable inside it broken, But mine is not even bent or the cable busted. So that clearly shows how much you use, how u use it, and how well u take care of it.

Inside the switch assembly there is a spring. There is a little plastic cap on the spring that sort of keeps is straight rather than flexing to the side. When the plastic cap on the spring at the base of my wiper control arm broke the arm lost its tension and got all "floppy." I felt like the design of the cap was not very robust. Mine broke when the car was about seven years old. I basically epoxied a piece of the cap back on the spring and epoxied a small piece of stiff wire into the spring coils to keep the from flexing.
It must have worked well because it has held up for seven years!
