Hey all, I have an 88 Accord DX w/ the A20A1 engine and I either must rebuild it because it has a leaky head and bad clutch,, also clutch gets wet so I believe the main seal is leaking. Do I just rebuild this engine, or is there a good easy swap to throw in instead? I notice good pricing for the 4th gen Accord engines on ebay, but can you put those in?
ANy suggestions would be great.
I am not looking for more power, just something inexpensive and reliable...
A 4th gen engine will not drop in without a lot of custom work. You will need an entire new electrical and fuel syatem, along with custom mounts.
If you want inexpensive and reliable just stick with the A20.
i agree with k-roy unless your looking to do an engine swap then i recommend a b16A1 it'll be the easiest swap you can do to your car

Does anyone know if the A20A1 and A20A3 have the same cylinder head? Is there a diff between the carb'd and fuel injected cylinder heads, are they innerchangeable?

and yes Fi is more powerful 116HP to 102 HP,
and heads are innerchangeable but this is a first step,
fuel lines, fuel pump, ECU, wires, some engine bay comparement, and so on,
so its not so easy, but as some ppl did here its do-able

I think my question was misunderstood.
I have a carb'd engine.
I need a new cylinder head.
I dont want an EFI setup.
Can I buy a cylinder head for either the carb'd or the fuel injected and it work w/ my carb'd engine, or do I have to buy a carb'd head for my carb'd engine

intake manifolds should be changeable,
so fuel injectors with no fuel in a head, and carburator on a intake should work, but Ive never did this and cant give you a guarantie.
If they make a Weber carbed Porsches 944 in US out of FI without changing heads , so there ve got to be the way to do it with honda :-)
EFI A20A3/A20A4 and CARB A20A1/A20A2 heads will bolt up no problem, the A3 and A4 have higher compression though.
Save the Camshaft bearing on the distributor side from the A1 Carb head and swap it over to the A3/A4 EFI head, you might also want to swap the Carb camshaft into the EFI head...
I'm holding the A3/A4 bearing in my hand, I already swaped in the A1/A2 bearing.
Cool, so what are the effects of me putting the a3/a4 head onto my a1 engine? You said higher compression? With this cause any bad effects?
Do the exhaust and Intake bolt up directly the same i take it?

i'm entire rebuilding an A20A3 that bougth at the junkyard, to be used on my poject 89 LX, the original A1 block and head are damaged .
i know i need to use the dist carb piece at the head but i dont undestand why you talk about using original carb camshaft. I was thinking on using whole LXi head and block (i'm using pistons from the A1).
help man. Both cams are OK.

well if you have a new A20A3 and want to use it then go ahead... the cam specs on the EFI are different then the Carb cam, so you should swap out the cam, unless you want to try the efi cam... it will still run with either one in there, but it will be different.
How come you are using A1 pistons?
because one A3 piston have a bent rod others have overheated signs on skirts(i never turn the crank at the junkyard, my bad), no blok damage and no cylinder damage on this A3 block just the crankshaft, but already machined to .010 w/oversized bearings. and as A1 pistons are all OK i'll use them.
original a1 have the crank broken in half and head is wraped, so all a1 is bad just the pistons and cam are in good shape.
