engine floods when secondary opens

well, i need some helt with this... when i make a sudden stop, then get on the accel pedal enough to open the secondary, my engine dies... i have looked through my carb after it'd done this, and the manifold has a considerble amount of fuel sitting in it...

maybe i'm having routing issues with my vac removal...

post some suggestions assuming i have the removal correct (stage 2)... i did have to put in a vac canister to keep the car running (would die at any idle setting)... i don't have any check valves installed... can that be my problem??

i need the car running ASAP so i can get a job... keep in mind that i have as pair of DCOEs sitting on my shelf waiting for a manifold... i don't want to spend any money on carb related parts... i DO have parts laying around, so suggest something and i'll see if i have it...

are you still using the slow mix solenoid? (the wire on the back of the carb other than the choke heater one)

the one wire actually attached to the carb, with a single green [red] wire? yes, it is hooked up, but i'm unsure if it works or not...

so you converted to mechnical secondary? cause it sounds like you removed the secondary diaphragm but didn't convert by adding the A/C part to the throttle linkage.

did you adjust the idle when fully warm, did you adjust the throttle stop screw and or the idle diaphragm?

i converted to the mechanical secondary, then back to the vacuum secondary... it flooded either way... i did it as per the how-to you wrote...

yes, i adjusted it when warm... to begin with, i was using shepherd's how-to, and the car would do similar things... then i went to your stage 4, couldn't get that running right, then 3, same... down to stage 2-ish, looking at going to stage one...

i'm thinking that the problem is the carb itself... if that's the case, then i'll park the car until i can get my DCOEs put on... that's really the only option i have...

What did you do, did you adjust any screws like the A/F screw or did you remove the Air Jet controller?

When you removed the vacuum lines did you use a cap to seal the vacuum port on the cab or did you use a vacuum line from one port and connected it to another port to seal those two ports.... wrong way to do it. If you were to hook a vacuum line from a AIR JET port to a manifold vacuum port it would cause you to run rich and or suck up fuel into the vacuum line connected the the A, B, or C so make sure that you plug the Air jet port and vacuum line from the controller if you are not using that / those letters or connect the air jet port to the air jet contorller only and not to manifold vacuum.

you went to stage 4? So you removed the choke and other choke parts? You might have a vacuum leak if you removed a part and put it back on.

yes, i removed the choke and parts...

i don't intend to use a choke, either... the choke diaphragm on my current carb was bad, so it's useless...

i had removed the AJC, but it's back on now... the car runs pretty good until the secondary opens...

i think i'm going to go back to the drawing board for number 2 and try again... i used all new vac line, except on the AJC, which seems to have fairly new line anyway...

umm i don't mean to high-jack ..but i kinda have this problem too.
but mine's does'nt shut off.
one that solved the problem was my air filter...a less restrictive air filter will help this also.
but i still somewhat have this problem.
but if i take off normally then once i get up to about 20-30mph then push down it's fine.....
i hate fucking carbs...

lxi2.0. you might be onto something...

i'll run filterless and see what happens...

i may just keep running filterless (homeade velocity stacks)... most people run filterless with DCOEs, anyways... daily driver though, so it makes me a bit nervous...

is you powervalve plunger lifting up when you apply vaccum?
If the plunger supplied by #14 doesn't work or doesn't get vacuum then you end up with a open powervalve which causes you to run richer when you don't need to... I don't know if it would cause the fuel to dribble out of the secodnary nozzle prematurely... maybe if you removed the air jet contorller and disabled #14 then it could over power the lower air pressure in the emulsion tube and fuel would drible into the barrels with less resistance... though even if it weren't enough to flood the secodnary barrel you would run richer garunteed.

make sure you guys aren't tightening the throttle shaft nut too tight or you'll pinch the throttle and cause it to get stuck and or stratch the walls in the barrels creating air leaks in the throttle that weren't there before. this could affect idle... but probably not much.


I suggest you just keep the AJC and the vacuum secondary if you are having problems with the secondary.

remember that the choke puller has an internal vacuum line, make sure you plug the internal passage if you remove it with putty.

make sure the idle is set right and that the vacuum advance advances the timing to specs.

make sure the booster venturies are secure.

The vacuum secondary runs better with a filter because of the restriction and inscreased vacuum that having a filter creates...
when you convert to mechanical you no longer need the filter to create the vacuum...

the venturies where what i'm worried about... i mean, if they need new o-rings, it requires a rebuild kit... that's something i wanna stay away from... if i'm putting out $30 for a rebuild kit, that's $30 less i have to work with to get my DCOEs in...

well...

i found that my AJC "A" line was split... that can't help... other than that, the car is running better... i had to adjust the fuel bowl volume... looks like a lot of it was tied up in vacuum leaks... i'll replace the only old lines i have left, which are the AJC lines... i'm hoping that the lines are my problem... if it's that easy, then i'll be happy... if not, i'll be back in this thread...
