CAT convertor and mpg?

http://www.picvault.info/images/138474_Untitled-1.jpg i hear by removing the CAT on these cars allows for better MPG and power. any truth to this? maybe running a straight pipe after dumping it.(my muffler is new)
and will it be loud and annoying if i do so! nothing worse than than a 4cyl whining like a lawnmower...........
has anyone done this to thier car? i have zero experience with these cars. or any japanese car for that matter. but the $200 price tag for a solid no rust accord with 95k was hard to pass up.......

depending on what state you live, this mod can be illigal. If you have emission test, you can't remove it.

and yes, it will improve gas mileage.
I have headers with straight pipe, no resonator and dynomax muffler. it is a little loud, but my gas mileage around 38-40 on highway.

I thought the power and milage increase was a myth? A little bit of power maybe, but why mpg?

also....just on a sidenote:

will you get a bit better mpg by just changing to a higher flow cat? something like this?

if you let exhaust gases to escape faster without anything holding them back, you will increase mpg.

Unless you're adding more fuel and air you're not getting more power, you're simply decreasing power loss thus increasing the engines efficiency.

Less pumping loss, more power added to the drivetrain, more mpg.

Hiflow is better for the environment too.... I would go straight pipe, but then I'd be like bush.. and there is no way I want to be like that
