starting and running problems
When it sits over night it wont start. Its an A20AI, 87 Accord DX. I have to get out and prime the carb so it will start. After it starts it will crank the rest of the day. Now the second problem is it idles at 2500 to 3000 all the time even when its warmed up. ive got the idle screws backed all the way out. Ive checked to see if I have any vacume leaks but there is none. Ive slaped the gas pedal like Ive been told that would help but it dont. Any suggestions?
Re: starting and running problems
First of all, is the cam that controls the fast idle rotating as it warms up? Is there something binding the linkage so the throttle won't close? What you really need to do is look and see what is preventing the throttle from closing down to the regular idle stop.
As far as the not starting first thing in the morning, do you have anyproblem with sudden acceleration? (when you romp on the throttle does it take off or does it stumble a little then finally take off) if so probably accelerator pump. First thing in the morning, take off the air cleaner cover and with a mirror and flashlight look into the carb and open the throttle all the way and see if there is a stream of gas squirted in.....
Re: starting and running problems
I had a very smiliar problem starting in the morning with my DX. It would idle very rough (on 3 cylinders) for a few minutes before clearing up, and it wouldnt have another problem until the next morning. I was the told that it was the carb.
Re: starting and running problems
It seems like these carb. Accords do this over time. My idle wouldn't come down either (2,500-3,000 r.p.m.) I'm thinking it is one of the thermovalves & possibly the distributor is going out on my car. My car had other problems, so it's torn apart. It has a rebuilt carb. from Holley too.
If you find out where your problem is, let us know.
Re: starting and running problems
Well I found my problem, I've got a burnt exh. valve on the #2 cyl. I have the head in the shop being fixed as we speak. Hopefully this will solve a few of the problems with the running issue. As far as the not starting in the morning it was the accellerator pump, changed that and it fires right up but ran like crap. Checked the comp. on the cylinders and #2 was zero. Gonna put a new water pump on while its down and easy to get to. Hopefully I can get it back in time, I put #1 @TDC and pulled the head so wish me luck when the head go's back on.
Re: starting and running problems
Might think about putting a new timing belt & tensioner on while it's torn apart. I would buy new head bolts too, they are TTY bolts "torqued to yeild" & stretch, but that is your call. Appreciate the update too.
