Alright guys I bought one of those MSD Blaster 2 coils, the universal type. What do you guys think, should I put it on my 77 Trans AM (6.6L V8), or my 87 Accord LXi?
Have any of you tried these? And if so is it really worth it on these cars? Will there actually be any performance (or any other) difference at all?
I've tried it on my accord. I've also tried the Accel connister style Coil. They were the same to me.
I'm using a different Accel coil now.
I don't think you get much performance from the blaster 2, it's more for reliable spark if you think your stock coil is giving out.
Here is what I have no, much better in my opinion... maybe the "MSD Blaster SS" will be about the same

yeah that's what I've heard, that it will mostly just give you a better idle and better throttle response, which is also fine with me.
I have a blaster II, and with some ignition problems (with my built b20a with msd 6al ignition and ngk plugs/wires) I thought my coil was heating too much and was to blame. I replaced it with an Accel coil, and noticed exactly 0 difference in how it operated. Heated up exactly as much, sparked the same, same size....
No difference at all. I took the Accel back to Advance auto parts once I diagnosed the fact that the coil wasn't my problem. I wouldn't have a preference. I imagine my stock coil would have been fine too, for the most part. Good luck.
i bought one. its not a huge performance mod! i mean its not like its going to give you 100 hp right off the bat. its more of a peace of mind type of thing. if you invest in the coil, better wires, and some ngk spark plugs you will know that you have some definite perfert spark everytime. before i bought mine though, i had some severe idle problems. i mean the car would was at around 500 to 700rpm. sometimes it would even turn off. i messed around with theidle screw and it would fix it for a few hours or so. first i bought the blaster coil. the idle was so much better i couldnt believe it i mean it went from that to a constant smooth 900, although it wouls drop sometimes i was happy. then i bought better wires and plugs. PROBLEM FIXED!
like i said, more of a peace of mind mod :|

I think I have the 8231, the big canister. Trust me I quite understand you won't notice any real power difference with ignition stuff lots of times, but I used to drive a Fiero, and you actually did get quite a performance gain by going to an aftermarket ignition system. Just wondering if possibly our cars were the same.
BTW, the MSD Blaster says that in order to use it the coil with the stock ignition system you have to put a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor inline to the positive side. Will this really make a difference?
what's the RF filter look like?
You will probably not be able to use it in the T/A. I am pretty familiar with the Pontiac 400 and if I am not mistaken in 77 they were using the HEI distributor with the coil installed in the distributor cap. They do make aftermarket coils for HEI, but they also go into the cap.
I replaced the old Delco points type distributor in my 72 Catalina with an HEI unit from a 75 Grand Prix. Once I got the weights and springs right for the advance curve the car run much better and got a little better fuel economy. Also the spark plugs lasted a lot longer. Ah, memories.
i'd recommend the blaster 2 coil. i have one in my 3gee and its definately better than the old stock one. and if you decide to do more upgrades on the ignition its able to handle more voltage.
Well the Blaster 2 says that I need a 0.8 ohm resistor inline with the coil so as not to destroy it if I'm still using the stock ignition system. Someone messaged me telling me to just hook it up to the RF filter, what is an RF filter and how will I do this properly?
c'mon guys, I really want to install my Blaster 2, but nobody can give me any answer as to how to install it with the "RF Filter" so as not to burn it out.

just lookin through here fast, dont know if you need help connecting the coil or not. but check out the 2nd page, scroll down and check out my pix. they should help you out to determine what and where to connect things. and as for the resistor ballast, you dont need it on this car, its doesnt have any type of computer controlled or whatever kind of coil that some cars have. its just power into the coil so you dont have to worry about anything there.

FYI the "stock" coil I have bought lately have had HALF the resistance the book specs. You could look at those to. Not sure how well they work or how long the ignition will last.
