How'd you make sure that flywheel is still balanced? Couldn't you risk making it slighty off and ruining a bearing?

in regards to the balancing issue... the two option so far are take it someplace to have it balanced or if i can find good enough bearings i'm going to balance it myself

if i was you i would take it somewhere to balance it. it can't be that expensive plus i am sure it will be worth it.

Do you know how much lightening a flywheel costs? I know each shop will be diffrent but anyone have a ballpark figure?

Someone is selling lightned flywheels... I think you can buy it or send in yours to be lightned.

Not sure it's such a good idea. Heavy flywheels help out cars with not a whole lot of HP by providing momentum up hills and stuff. I've driven a car with an insanely light flywheel, and... it was... weird. Yeah, it revs a lot quicker. It was decently fast...but as soon as you hit any decent hill you had to downshift like crazy.

Zeph, is that crank pully chipped on one side? It kinda looks like it is in that pic where you have it on the scale.

are you joking? notice the huge holes along the outer edge and the ridges that are shaved way down.... :P

oh yeah its way chipped. we messed it up while pulling it off of my motor so i let zeph use it for science

to the is it chipped question... as bobafett said... ya it's really chiped... so i figured i could just hack it apart to see how much i could lose
and the flywheel has those big wholes... is missing almost all of the front ring,, and has no ring of extra weight on the back.
and why i want a lightened flywheel is the fact that rotational inertia kills what little horsies i have.... so anything to lower my loses in the drive train helps... ya for street driving it's no ideal... but i really don't care. just wait til i post pics of my next project.

OMG hahaha boba I thought that they were there on the original pic but, the glare was to bad for me to see them. haha But thanks :slap: When you send your flywheel to phrenerology or whoever on here will lighten them is that basically what they will do as well? Also, if you were to make the pully have a larger diameter would that help or hurt? Like about the same weight as the lightened one but, just bigger. Now that I see the difference it looks amazing! :)

unless the outside of the pulley is really light, and the inside has most of the weight, i imagine you WOULD lose power, because it takes more energy to spin something the further from the center axis it is (i believe)....
and yes, a phrenology flywheel is similar idea, but definetly less extreme...

But Diameter = Strength so it's a trade off between having beefy large diameter gears, wheels, etc. and having to deal with the added drain on power to try and turn them.

Anyone use the PAECO aluminum Crank pully? I wonder if they sell it with or without A/C and PS pully sections.

From what I understand, a lightenened flywheel will give you zero more hp. It just increases your engine's ability to rev faster, hence you'll be able to get to your peak power faster. The best reason for having one is when you let off the gas, the engine should spin down a lot quicker, allowing you to shift straight into your powerband each time.

Yup, HP comes from more fuel and air.
Efficiency however will cut back on HP lost...

a lightened flywheel doesnt make the motor create any more horsepower, but the lightned mass means that the engine uses less power to spin the flywheel, resulting in more power to the wheels (whp, the only kind that really matters).
ps. paeco lightened crank pulleys dont exist anymore. :(

dont ever use an aluminum crank pulley on a honda, the stock one is a harmonic balancer as well and if you eliminate it the harmonics will eat the bottom end up badly and pretty quickly too

i'm not gonna use my chewed up one.... it was simply and experiment to see how much weight i could loose.
