b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
i got my skunk manifold in the other day and i got the itch yesterday!
I went over to checker auto parts picked up a a20 intake gasket held it up to the new manifold......Time to start cutting!LOL. I was pretty nervous cutting into a brand new manifold. I must say it was pretty much cut and dry. I drilled two holes on the inside of the 1st and 4th runners and cut off a section on the flange and busted out the dremel cleared the top of the flange for the bolt heads, pollished alittle and she was done.(2 hours)
I also fit and mounted the 70mm ford tb (5.0 mustang)
i had to redrill mounting holes and clear for 1 bolt.
I need to visit a machine shop to line bore the tb section of the manifold from 68mm to 70.25mm and i'll call that done.
next on the list to buy is a golden eagle fuel rail, vacume block, injectors and a 1:1 fpr..
Then management goes in.....
I do have a question though....
turbo guys. where did you put your o2 sensors? right after the turbo 12" past ect...right now i have mine at the same lenth from the #3 runner as stock. I heard that you need to move it down from the turbo (12" or so) to get an accurate reading.
opinions on wastegate? out to atmosphere or into down pipe? the reason i ask is because the o2 does'nt see the gasses if vented to atmosphere.
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
merge the wastegate exhaust back into the downpipe, but do it a couple of feet or so away from the turbo because if you run it open air it sounds like shyt... Oxygen sensors? Who said anything about oxygen sensors? Haha there were 2 in my stock exhaust mani, i dont have either of them hooked up but i still only get a cel once in a while. Ill make this simple for you, put the o2 sensor in the downpipe.
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
I can tell from your question that you haven't bought a wideband yet..the intructions tell you where to mount it. Basically you mount it where it won't get overheated by the exhaust. It has its own heater, you could mount it almost at the tailpipe if you wanted to.
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
Why would it matter if the 02 didn't see the gasses vented to the atmosphere? They would be a different a/f ratio? no..
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
there is no way that oxygen is going to flow back into the exhaust manifold through the wastegate when you have 50psi of exhaust gas in there pushing out

that's exactly what i am woundering.. would it make a differance in the a/f ratio.
it's going to cost me $700 for the upgrade kit and wide-band, so i am still waiting for the irs to pay me...
yet i ordered a golden eagle vacume block and fuel rail yesterday..
still looking for a 1:1 fpr and injectors.

i changed my mind again i am going with the stand alone so i can hook up anything i want.
but if i remember right the ford tps runs the same voltage ect. as our's.
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
you'r probably right but it seemed the same on my afc...
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
have you checked the resistance butween the 2 yet?
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
i'll check both of mine tommarrow.

How would it do that?
What wideband are you planning on getting?
Get one that has a Linear output..ie, not the Zeitronix..
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
well figure you'r letting upto 1/3 of you'r exhaust gas bypass the wideband or o2 in my case. so those gasses arent getting metered by the sensor.
i finnally decided to put in the holley commander ecu so i will be purchasing the wideband upgrade and pro software.
neptune is cool but i am not paying someone $50 an hour to tune it.

So what? You think the sensor comes into contact with every gas molecule in the exhaust stream? And the gasses that would make the sensor read lean or whatever would just decide to exit through the wastegate and bypass the 02? How would a flow path alter the makeup of the gas itself?
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
it doesnt, thats why you can put an o2 sensor pretty much anywhere in the exhaust system. Ive seen guys put them in their mufflers! I personally wouldnt run a wideband o2 sensor all the time, just for tuning purposes, the sensors arent cheap and dont last forever, if you use it with leaded race gas they probably wont last a full day of tuning.
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
they say with the O2 is to put in close to stock location so about 12" for us. The wideband O2 sensors run about $60 to replace but they are also a safety check from you blowing your engine. If you loose fuel pressure or something you will not know you are running lean with out that O2 sensor in there..........
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
if you lean out or the car is running funny you will def notice it, besides, keeping your eye on the afrs when youre busy pulling 120mph rippers is pretty tough. Even watching your boost gauge is tough when youre trying to drive fast.
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
yep is sure is hard, sometimes you dont even see the tach until you hear the rev limiter then you remember to shift :slap:
Re: b18a skunk 2 pro-series manifold.........
I just like having it there, no such thing as being too safe, esp when you figure the cost to rebuild a bottom end. Though as most of us, we do daily drive these car so it more like getting full boost at 55mph not 120mph. If you starting leaning out even by 1.0 a/f by the time you reach 120mph your pistons could all ready be gone.
It did happen to me by the way, but i was able to catch it soon enough before the pistons melted. I lost fuel pressure and my a/f went from about 12.0 to 13.5 under 8psi of boost. This was enough to raise my EGT's quite a bit and make the manifold glow a nice orange.

I was trying to guide the dude into concluding this through my line of questioning..and I must say, I was getting a little exasperated doing it..
Most of the aftermarket widebands use a vw/bosch sensor, it should last like 100k. If you don't cook it in the first 10 minutes by placing it too close to the turbo.

exasperated........
i was pissed the first 10 times i read this.
i may not know alote about placement and the technical shit, but i dont think i am doing too bad, seeing i am already catching you'r ass on the 1/4 .I don't ask too many questions or post alote.
i read and figure alote of this by myself.
the only reason i was'nt boosted by my third post was k-mod decided to bone me for a grand.
dont think that i havent earned my shit.
on a lighter note once i fix my truck the intake is going on with the stand alone.
i got the g.e. fuel rail and vaccume block rc 850cc injecters areomotive 1:1 fpr. 8an fuel line to the filter and 6an to the rail. duel 255lph pumps.
i appoligize but if you treat me like shit i'll treat you the same way.
