question bout hydrocarbon
okay a friend of mines has a 71 ford galaxy 500..wit a 351ci carb engine.
the car has been sitting for a while this year.
took to emissions and it failed...had high hydrocarbons.
i was thinking 'bout doing a full tune-up, and seafoam.
the exhaust has been replaced 'bout 2 years ago.....
also was told if the cat was bad then both hydro carbons and carbon monoxide would be bad.
so whould a full tune-up help??
Re: question bout hydrocarbon
wait... 71 had emissions? On that car the carb could be running rich it could be the plugs or cat, a number of things could cause this, but yes a full tune up is a perfect place to start
Re: question bout hydrocarbon
umm i think so i looked under tha hood quick but i did'nt see it.
but yea thats the only thing thats high.
if it does'nt then they should'nt fail it...
Re: question bout hydrocarbon
it shouldent have to be smoged
i dont think
Re: question bout hydrocarbon
i wish our cars didnt have to be to go through emission anywhere.....
Re: question bout hydrocarbon
that sounds very normal for something like that, especially with the engine you said it has. HC's are going to be pretty high anyway, i doubt it has a catalytic converter unless someone has put one on it. it wouldnt be a bad idea to do a tune up. maybe set the timing correct and put some new ignition components on. maybe tune the carb or get a newer one. having no cat. converter can cause a high count of HC's though. just curious, but do you know what the NOx reading was?
Re: question bout hydrocarbon
What were the readings and what were the limits. If it was close you can sometimes just pour some stuff into the gas and run a tank through. There is some junk they sell in auto stores that says something like "guaranteed to help you pass emissions...."
Is the car smoking or anything visible? Does it have an EGR valve? If so, see if its working. The '71 motors didn't have much in the way of pollution stuff...I yanked all mine off (had a 440 6 pack Challenger) and it still passed.
Re: question bout hydrocarbon
because seriously, if you were pre emission vehicle you could do whatever you want and they cant touch you. Im gonna stick a corvette motor with no cats, no egr, no charcoal canister into my oldschool chevy impala lol, then procharge it. Completely legal. Even in cali.
