1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
i have a 1987 accord lxi. i have a header now i just need exhaust and a muffler. many people have said to use a 2 1/4" pipe to a magnaflow muffler, w/o a cat. i went to the exhaust shop and asked them to supply and bend a piece of tubing for me.. we got into conversation and he said that if i used this size pipe i would lose most of my torque. he said that with that large of pipe most the backpressure would be gone and my torque would suck. has anyone gone with this size of pipe and no cat? how is the torque?
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
It has been agreed time and time again that 2.25" is the ideal exhaust size for our cars in non-turbo applicatons. I have even run 2.5" and the difference wasn't much noticible from 2.25". Use search next time, and don't expect your local muffler guy to know the specifics of every vehicle on the road.
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
I went with a 2 1/4" exhaust all the way through on my 89, it was the best choice. I've never heard of anyone losing torque because of that.

What he said.
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
yeah i went to the Magnaflow site and they said that 2.25 is the perfect size for a 2.0l engine. i just got pacesetter headers and im going to install everything at the same time. i have the headers, High flow magnaflow cat, magnaflow muffler...yeah i heard about loosing low end torque cuz the engine would not have lots of pressure...just reve it more and drop the clutch if you have a 5 speed.
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
im using a 2" exhaust and my exhaust is flowing happy throughouth the whole rpm range ;)

use a cat, though. the whole felony thing should get to you. that's why i've never been to a shop that would remove a cat without putting another one back in, even as side work. the only time i've heard of one being done was when the car had no exhaust at all.

The muffler tip has alot more to do with the sound then having or not having a cat, especially if it's a highflow cat. Diameter, rolled in or out, length, exhaust velocity, and exhaust output really determine your exhaust note more then anything else.
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
mine has no cat, but we dont have inspections or smog or anything at all. as long as you have exhaust and its not louder than 96db i believe its fine. But before he stated that 2.25 was too big he shouldve at least looked at your engine. 2.25" is plenty for most 4 cylinders, even d15s
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
it does help with popping, though.
and inspection or not, it's STILL a felony. still illegal. that goes for ANYWHERE in the US.
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
i have nothing but 2.25 pipe and hangers, and i noticed a slite drop in torque below like 4000 rpms but past that is like dammnnn!

so whats the best setup to run and still stay smog legal
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
i'm running 2 1/4 " pipe from my cat back into a 20 inch glass pack then to a 12 inch glass pack into a Y pipe, dualed out to the back. people told me i'd lose a bunch of low end power with it set up like this. but really i havent. i have gained a noticeable bump in power after 3000 rpm, but below that rpm isnt really all that bad. probably better than it was originally. if you like to spin tires then it helps also, especially if you have a manual tranny. i plan on getting they header also.

just use a highflow cat. magnaflow seems to be what i hear of most people getting. highflow cats can be had for just over $100 on ebay.

i didnt want to get one of thoes JDM(fake ass high flow cats) they are only test pipes with o2 sensors...i got a Magnaflow 53005 the 2.25inch one for 40 bucks...i did that best offer thing and the dude accepted i was like sweet just saved 13 bucks from what he was asking
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
yeah, those are the cats i'm talking about, not the "mad tyte JDM y0" ebay cats. i'm talking about the real highflow cats.
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
thats just a pipe with matching flanges on it so it fits your car thats on ebay. i dont think they have a O2 sensor place in them though or even a test hole in them. lol. but why even get one of those, just use the stock one if your not gonna have any catalyst in it, just hollow it out. but i think i want to get a nice magnaflow cat or something more cheaply priced, but the real deal converter since i dont know when they will start doing the exhaust gas testing here where i live.
Re: 1987 accord exhaust... will it be a dog off the line
no, what i'm referring to are the magnaflow cats that are on ebay. they can be found.
doesn't state that it's a highflow, BUT: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MAGNA...QQcmdZViewItem
