My CAI Install

Alright here is finally the pics and writeup from my CAI install mentioned here:

I purchased this:

The basics:
-Did NOT need to move or relocate the battery (tight fit though)
-Did NOT need to cut the hole next to the battery into the fender
-DID need to cut the 'teg intake piping
-DID need to reuse one of the plastic joints from the stock intake in order to get the filter placement right
-DID need to remove the horn and its mounting bracket (will relocate later - there is one in each front fender so I still have the one on driver's side)

Overall pic - also features my Accel SuperStock coil and NGK wires

Yes I know that old red vacuum hose off the back of the throttle body is hideous - I will be replacing it soon.

the view from inside the front fender - it never would have fit with the horn and its bracket still in place. the wires hanging are those from the horn and leftovers from the fog lights (the car used to have)

Here's a good shot of the piece that I reused from the stock intake. The piece is about a 110 degree bend. There was a hole in the piece but I jammed a bolt down in it to seel it up. Without this bend to turn the filter and place it forward it never would have fit.

Overall I'd say it is no doubt the best $33 I have ever spent on my car. The air filter is pretty crappy but I figure I will use it for a few months and then replace it with a good one from K&N or AEM.

Yes definitely! Hopefully it will increase my MPG a bit too - IF I can keep my foot out of it :rockon: which is hard to do cause it sounds freakin sweet!
The best part is almost no change in the tone or volume at < 3,500 rpm and/or < 70% throttle. So just driving around casually or cruising on the highway it is not loud and annoying -- but stomp the gas and it's music to the ears :)

More details...

The pipe section attached to the throttle body is unmodified.

The other pipe section had to be cut on both ends.
The stock 'teg shape came up through the fender headed straight toward the back of the car. It then gradually bent 90 degrees to join up with the other pipe. We turned the pipe more toward the engine and cut it midway through the bend to line up at the right angle.

The end of the pipe down in the fender was also too long. We cut about 3 inches or so off this end.

Also there was a flat bracket piece welded to the pipe near the end of the section in the fender. This was designed to attach somewhere in the 'teg. It needed to be hacked off in order for the pipe to fit down into the fender.

Overall install was not very difficult. Did everything with just normal mechanic's tools, a crappy hacksaw, and a dremel (to hack through the welded-on bracket thing).

Took me and a friend about 1.5 hours but at a slow pace including smoke breaks and bud light.

Careful that it doesn't rub on those brake lines, or you'll rub a hole right through them, trust me I know it happend to me, but looks sweet nice work!

yes it is VERY close to the brake lines - I don't think it's making contact though. I've been checking on it every couple days to make sure everything looks good. so far so good.

wow looks like you had to do a lot of work to get it to fit. hmm...i had to do a bit of less work to get the 91 civic aem cai to fit....and not much work at all to get the current one i have to fit perfectly. which i think is from a 5g or something like that

not bad not bad at all. almost inspires me to go out and get one and make my sri a true cai.

woot you convinced me...im going to buy one this very min...i dont like the idea of moving the horn... more info on that later...but yeah good job this should be a sticky

i didn have to move any horn...the only thing is i had to shift the battery a bit to the towards the drivers side. and i didnt cut the second pipe in two places...just the bottom part. i dunno...i just feel mine was a bit easier to install or maybe you guys have different cars lol. oh and i did have to make the hole bigger on the fender. but thats it.

i still say buying a u bend from jcwhitney and making your own would be a lot easier. then again thats just me. it would turn out about the same price. i posted a link to the how to on another thread about cai's. i think it was the ebay cai one or something. anyway gl with your adventures guys

Sound like my intake it's from a 6th gen and it fit with ZERO mods.

Sounds good, so when you get tired of that one you now know which one to get next time. The intake I have on my car now is my 4th because I keep finding better designs that get me a tenny bits more power. But the one I have right now is a AEM knockoff and it's badass I think I'm sticking with this one.

dude when u get this send me a frin request because i got an intake and it was gonna b cai but it was too short to b cai and to long to b short ram so i just took a lil bit off but any way did u haeto take off ur bumper to put on the intake or wut did u do i cant really c cause i looked at mine and the botom is covered off wit plastic and cant c nutin!!!!!

Thats 2.5" diameter?

I had some stray sheet metal hanging into the hole so it made a very lop-sided circle. I ended up pounding the protruding edges with a hammer to make the hole into a more circular shape.

That red line is for fuel vapor. so replace it with fuel line and not regular vaccum hose.

Ordered a 90-93 teg' cai off eBay and they sent me a one piece. Way too much modification for me and the "s" bend that comes off the throttle body was WAY shorter than the 2 piece system. Contacted the seller about returning when I noticed the same seller also has the 2 piece for the gen 6 Accord listed. Contacted the seller again and he is willing to do an exchange since the teg' one isn't what I ordered. His gen 6 one is about $8 more than the teg's but I convinced him that I will just pay the shipping back on the intake I have now. building a custom airbox since I can't find a civic one anywhere around where I live! I'll post up some pics when I'm done.

its one bolt and you can pull that plastic down,, you really shouldnt have to remove your bumper..

my question is:

I had 2 vacuum hoses plugging into the plastic stock air intake line and there are no ports on the 90-93 integra CAI for these hoses to attach. What should be done with these? Right now I just have them hanging loose -- is this ok?

gah...now i wish i hadnt ordered a u bend off jcwitney seeing as i could have gotten the connectors, cut tubes and filter all for the price of the tube from jcw :( though that one is 2.75" diameter..

at least looking at that cai i can see how i need to cut the ubend :)
