A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
First off if it's been done before and posted before kill the tread.
First off materials used. All Spectre and purchased at Autozone
-Air Intake tube 3.00" 19.99
-Intake Funnel 17.99
-Intake coupler 2"-3" 6.99
Tools
Box Cutter
2 Pliers
1 Set of Lock-pliers my best friend
Cordless Drill
Rachet set or anything with a 10mm socket.
Jack 2-ton Jack or whatever you have.
flathead screwdriver
hammer (even though i did'nt have one and used the lock pliers as a hammer)
1 find the hook on the front of your car and raise it there.
2 pop the hood
3 disconnect the battery Negative First!!!!!
4 pull the sucker out.
5 if you still have the stock intake take the fuse box off it's 3 bolts and the yank the stock "sidetake" off
6 take your box cutter and score the coupler 4 times go halfway down on the short side and the long side.
7 place the coupler on the end of the air box tighten.
8 here comes the harder part. get your 10 mm socket and start removing the bolts on the battery plate and were dealing with old cars
here please wear gloves i did'nt and my knuckles are peeled.
9 you don't have to take all the bolts off but once you take enough off to pull
the plate up to see what's under it.
10 now that the plate is up you'll see a hole with a plastic cover use your flathead screwdriver to pry the cover up and now you have found the hole we are going to use.
11 the real annyoing part begins. grab your drill and start making holes about 1 inch away from the edge of the hole. keep them close enough to each other.
12 after you drilled enough holes grab your screwdriver and put it on the spaces between the holes and hammer them away until you have a full breach.
13 Then used your screwdriver and just twist the metal until you can fit your pliers and use those to pry the metal away cause it's very soft here.
14 widen the hole until you can fit the hose through.
15 pull it through, now get under the car in front of the right front tire the rubber part remove the bolt (in my case it broke off) and
then you should see the hose depending on color the intake hose.
16 grab one of the adapters that came with the hose and put it on the intake funnel, the side with the grooves goes on the hose. assemble the funnel
17 i think this step should go before the other one but it's done so n.e ways.
place the other adapter from the hose kit on the hose and twist it around, now that it's tight place it inside the coupler and tighten.
18 your almost there with the hose in the coupler, hold the hose next to the coupler and pull from the bottom make sure that the hose doesn't come out. this just gives your leeway in the bumber to place the funnel where you want it.
19 arrange the funnel in the bumper how you want it. close up the rubber under it.
20 place the hose securly and now try to fit the fuse box and the battery back in with out pinching any electrical cables cause theres a bunch in that area.
Viola your done.
Pics are below. And a video is available it has a turbo sound blow off at redline, it can't be heard because of the excessive bass that my camera picked up. so whoever wants to you can just play it in winamp and use the EQ drop the first five bands and rasise the rest. Sorry i'm a audiophile too.

Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
so do u feel a power dif or is just a sound
i tried the fliped lid thing and it dident even sound dif
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
oh and what kind of filter are u using
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
well the last time i actually drove it with the hose sticking out once i felt a large difference once it reached high 2800rpm+ right around 3 i would breathe like crazy.
Well when i finished this mod this night 7pm and i live in New york city so i was'nt going to lose my parking spot.
Lol i write about it tommorow because it's the day to move the car street cleaning rules. at 11:30
p.s. i have a duralast filter K&N was like 60+ at the time i did the tune up.
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
so with the way u did it with a shirt ram and a regular round filter it should pull the same
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
yeah i think it would be better if it had a real tube since that tube has ridges and the air does not flow that good...plus in one of the pics the tube looks pinched against the battery. i also have an K&N filter and i felt a diference since my old was had like 10k miles on it
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
lol...just stick with the civic carb box mod....this doesnt look like it would work right. but im not a carb guy
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
yeah it's probaley true but using a real tube is more expensive and this a simple method of just reloacating the intake.
once i get a job and drive every day i'll probabley get a K&N filter maybe even a weber carb.
lol as i was typing this up a K&N commercial played. the coffee one. paper filters are for coffee. :( i bought the mid level filter is duralast that bad?
At least i have a K&N oil filter :)
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
K&N is the best....i just got it since it has million mile waranty...it was like 37 bucks online....but since you got a new filter it does not mater. doesnt NY have car inspections? webers are not legal if you have to smog a car.
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
are you serious that's gay. yeah i have emissons inspections which is why i plan to still use a magnaflow cat if i do change the exhaust .
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
Sorry but that looks like crap, get a metal intake.
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
My car came from the factory with a cold air intake like that. The air cleaner box ran from the carb up to the front bumper next to the headlight. :) Didn't the 3geez come like that too? I can't remember how mine looked before I pulled the engine out of the engine bay...
The thing with the carb'd Accords is that there is an air intake temperature controller on the airbox. It's that little round thing on the intake tubing right before the filter. It actually takes hot air off of the exhaust manifold and keeps the air temp going into your intake at about 100 degrees F, if I recall correctly.
So you can bring the cold air in from anywhere, but unless you disconnect that valve and remove that air hose from the exhaust manifold heat shield, it's still pulling hot air into the carb.

Yeah there it is on the 2g. w00t!

Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
yeah the carb has a tube that goes into the fender were it sucks up air...i took it off and didnt feel any thing.
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
yeah it looks like crap but it's not for looks. i was thinking what the little round thing is on the air box.
Hey thanks alot 2nd Genguy, that's something i did'nt even think of i thought it was just a Temp sensor not a gas recirculator.

Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
hmmm maybe you should find some tubing or make a sketch of the dimensions and call somebody who could make some tubing... i work at midas, we've got a bender i could prolly do some exhaust tubing... maybe 3"??? or more... lemme know what size is that tubing your using? doesn't look as big as gutter drain... but do you know the diameter? if not put a ball inside, baseball, tennis ball... bowling ball... show me how big it is... i could prolly work something out w/ a civic box... good idea!

Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
Delta makes the best hose for intakes... I tried others and none have the smooth interior lining.
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
Nice little How-To. To bad someone couldn't downsize the pics & sticky this.
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
It's not a gas recirculator. It just takes hot air from AROUND the exhaust manifold. I think it's just for emissions. I think that it burns cleaner at a certain temp.
You should disconnect that factory wire hose if you want cold air, remove the vacuum solenoid thingy that opens the door so that door stays shut. Any tme that door is open it's pulling in warm air and blocking the cooler air. If the air temp is ever below ~100 degrees F it will keep that door open to pull in warm air.
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
Actually now that I think about it, I think if you just disconnect the vacuum from that, it will keep that door inside the air intake tube closed. That will keep only the cold air in. You will just have to cap off that vacuum line or your car will run crappy.

If you don't have that hot air pickup, the choke electric heater will act funny in cold temperatures.

I can see that. If that's the case then is a CAI for a carb going to even do anything?
-
Re: A20A1 Carbed Engine CAI Write up with High res pic.
that's exactly what i was thinking about, to tell you the truth driving it around, it defintly runs smoother and gots some get up and go. not a major diference but now that i think about and i read it in my haynes manual.
it keeps the intake temp at around 100, if it's designed like that that must mean that carb runs best at that temp??? or maybe it's just emissions.
hey 2ndgenguy i was searching and i found your thread nice job with the new carb.
