Re: 5-speed swap questions
I used the salvage yard clutch cable. Everything in the how to should help you. I helped update so, give it a shot!
Re: 5-speed swap questions
I would buy a new clutch cable as it is inexpensive and over time they do stretch. I would buy one for a 90-93 integra as it is not as long and looks much cleaner in the engine bay.
As far as the starters, there are probably 2 different brands, like a Nippon or Denso which may have come in different years.
Re: 5-speed swap questions
on the starters for the manual trans. one has a threaded mounting hole and the other one does not thats the only difference between the 2 choices
Re: 5-speed swap questions
i would go with a new cable

so they were available w/ both mitsuba and nippon/denso starters. which one is the threaded one? the tranny i got has an unthreaded mounting hole...
and the 90-93 teg cable bolts on just as well, i take it?
Re: 5-speed swap questions
a few tips.
1. the only diff between manual and auto starter is the front cover. you can get used starter from junkyard cheap, remove the cover and swap the motors from a good auto one. The reason i know is because my started died a few years ago and the only one i had was auto. so i just swapped the motors.
2. pedals. they are a bitch to get there so take your time. remove as much as you can under the dash. just make sure you can remember where it all goes.
3. while you have everything removed. you may as well pull out the main relay. this way you can relocate where it is a lot easier to get to just in case.
4. clutch cable, yeah you should get new one. they are cheap. get 2gen teg one. it is a lot cheaper and it will look a lot better.
5. flywheel and tranny. there where two diff trannies and flywheels. most diff is the center of flywheel and main shaft of the tranny. if you look at the center of the flywheel you will see a whole. make sure the whole in the flywheel and the very end of main shaft is close in sizes. the very end of main shaft goes into the flywheel, about 1/2 inch or so. it keeps main shaft centered.
How i know that, again from experience. my old tranny had very small end and the flywheel had big end. it caused a lot of vibration and my clutch gave out in about 3 month period.
6. you will have to swap the rear mount. they are diff.
7. wiring will be easy. just run two wires for the back up switch to the center console where the auto switch was and connect them. use OEM shop manual, it will help a lot with wiring.
Re: 5-speed swap questions
I did the same with step #1, so he's telling the truth.
Re: 5-speed swap questions
so then actually, i can just get a jy starter (or the one from a member if he ever replies) and swap the covers. because i had a new starter put in back in august. and should i buy a whole new rear mount while i'm at it? thanks for the tips.
Re: 5-speed swap questions
just get the rear engine mount. i would get a new one.
Re: 5-speed swap questions
I have parts if you need them. I have a parts car just sitting.

sweet. i need the shift linkage, rear mount, starter (or at least the manual starter housing), shift knob, "leather" boot, rear engine mount "bracket" (i'm getting a new mount, but it says i'll need the oem brackets. so w/e those are, i need 'em), speedo cable, flywheel...what else am i forgetting? and i have another question. are the bellhousing-engine bolts the same as the auto tranny? if not, i'll need those too. how much do i owe you?
Re: 5-speed swap questions
well i dont have the flywheel, or shift knob and boot but its better to just buy a new flywheel anyways. Make me an offer for the parts and ill try to find out how much shipping it.
Re: 5-speed swap questions
how about $50 + shipping for the shift linkage, rear mount, starter housing, and speedo cable?
Re: 5-speed swap questions
Here are some pictures of what I used last summer when swapping:
(I was always going to write a big complete list, but have been really busy with college)

Engine mounts: Probably the same even though MT and AT parts are marked differently, but its a good time to replace them if needed:

Transmission Shield Thing (needed):

(I had to make a extra trip to the junkyard just to get this stupid part because I did not know it was different between the AT and MT)

Lots of shifter seals and stuff:

(sand blasted and painted with high temp BBQ paint for durability)
Pedals:

I also replaced the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, oil pump, and did the B series radiator swap while it was all apart.
I did grab the driver's side axle at the junkyard, but only for testing. As I expected, it was bad. I ended up buying one with a lifetime warranty for $60 from Checkers. For $5, the junkyard axle made a good core. My junkyard clutch cable has worked fine.
Remember to get the flywheel resurfaced. $5 at the junkyard for the flywheel, plus $50 for resurfacing.

I used a $110 eBay Exedy clutch. It has worked good.

I grabbed a junkyard MT starter, and swapped housings with my AT starter. It worked fine.
In some of the pictures you will see the huge manual transmission gaskets. I got these because I took the transmission apart to inspect it before I put it in. Doing this could save you a lot of trouble later if you happen to get a bad transmission at the junkyard. Do not order the gaskets separately, there is a part number that combines both and is cheaper. Look for it under gasket kits.
And remember, save all the bolts while you take apart stuff at the junkyard. Everything is slightly different between the AT and MT.
Re: 5-speed swap questions
I have a shift boot with a shift nob i will not be using, came with my steering wheel. Make me an offer shipped. Pm if you want it, otherwise it's going to sit in my garage for a while
