my gas gage is always up and down. i could go from half tank to empty and back in 10 mins, its always so anoyying cuz i never really know how much fuel i have. i really dont think my car is getting good mileage either. (although its hard to say)

it would go up and down when the car is parked on the flat spot?
if that is the case you need to replace the sending unit inside the fuel tank. it is easy to do and and it shouldn't cost you a lot of money. Go to junk yard and pick one up.
and if it's while you're driving, it depends on how much you have in your tank and your driving style. sudden starts and stops make the guage jump up and down much more than granny driving.
sounds like you need a new gas sender thingy...its on the passanger side of the gas tank...time to hit the junkyard i guess.
