I've adjusted my valves twice now, and they're still ticking a little. I think it is because I was turing the camshaft pully instead of the crankshaft pully. Anyway, what do you guys with stock cams normally set the spacing to? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
i do mine at 8 and 10.
it doesnt matter turning the cam or crank.
and there is always gonna be some ticking. all honda's are like that.
If you make them tight enough to eliminate the ticking completely they will be too tight and you will end up burning a valve.
mine has an annoying amount of ticking that it didn't have before I adjusted the valves the first time, that's all. I thought I was doing it to make my car quieter but it only got louder. :(
usually, those kinda stuff are better left to a mechanic, but if u can do it and know how to, then do it. U dont wanna mess with the internals ulnless ur 100% sure of it. The good thing about my mechanic is that he is a family mechanic and he usually has be right beside him, asking me to get my hands oily and work around the car with him. He is a kinda guy who does not want anything to be a trade secret. Man...... ppl like that are sooo hard to find these days.
Thats true. You're very lucky to have a pro to help you. I fixed it tonight and there's no more blatant, annoying ticking. I adjusted intake to 7 and exhaust to 10. Thanks for your help.

With Camregrind Mine are @
0.008" INTAKE
0.010" EXHAUST
I would be careful when setting the gaps to small, you could get slapping of the valves which sounds simmilar to tapping.
But tapping does less damage to the valvetrain.
my book says 5-7 intake, 10-12 exhaust, so it sounds like i'm within the limits.
first off you MUST turn the CRANKSHAFT PULLY, secondly the valve that you're adjusting MUST be on BASE CIRCLE. if your car is a manual, you can leave it in gear and just push it backwards(5th gear works the best).
my cam (213/[email protected] 0.431lft) is adjusted to 0.008in on all valves, no ticks, nice and smoooooth. if the the valves are to tight, then there will be no slack to absorb the valve train inertia and your valves will float. if the valves are to loose, then the valve train will destroy its self.
call your honda dealer to get the proper specs on the valves, but your ear should br good enough
strange, the book says nothing about all of that! Anyway, it doesn't tick anymore, and it doesn't slap and 10 exhaust and 7 intake are the max intake and min exhaust in my chiltons so i think i'm ok.
I used to use 6 and 11 since the manual indicated 5-7 and 10-12. I recently bought a set of "Go-No-Go" feeler gauges and it just so happens that 5-7 and 10-12 are two of the sizes. It is hard to explain how these things work, but they make the adjusting a lot easier than with the regular one-size feeler gauges. A trusted Honda mechanic recommended them to me.
I got mine at Auto Zone. They were right next to the regular feelers and were about $6.
