Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammed"
got this valve cover from the JY.. i stripped the paint, sanded and cleaned up up before spraying with "Rustoleum 7218 Dark Bronze Hammered".. or as i'm calling it Gunmetal Hammered since bronze makes you think of orange/brown more than dark grey.. plus 'gunmetal' is more baddass than 'dark grey' or 'dark bronze' :D

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
looks good....install it now...and get an OEM gasket for it.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
i just got a new gasket a year ago.. can i reuse it or should i get a new one
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
Try it and if it doesn't work get a new one. I would reuse it.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
bake it in the oven, just like BITESIZE did
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
lol.. maybe i should.. except then my apt will be filled with nasty paint fumes i think :barf:
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
It really doesn't stink the house up. Just turn the hood fan above the oven on. Makes a huge differance and will make the paint feather together to a glossy finish. Damn, I need to get Bullards B20 valve cover. I'm so damn busy!!

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
was the dx gasket less than a year old?
and bitesize at what temp & how long do u bake it for? it looks good as it is but if baking it will help it last longer i might try it.. though just turning the oven on stinks up the place lol even with the fan

if its stil nice and flexible and has no cracks you should be good to go
justmake sure everything is clean both in the groove where it sits in the valve cover and the cylinder head surface.
the cover looks good get it on an engine to see how it looks.

I pretend it's a frozen pizza. Extra crispy is how I like it. lol 400 for about 30 minutes, a little more than cooking a frozen pizza.

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
do you guys think it's safe to sand down the raised bits now or should I wait cause it might it cause flaking around the letters?
hmm maybe ill bake it since 30 mins isn't too long.. though i dunno if it even needs it. do i need to do it while it's still drying or is it ok if it wait?

I would wait a little longer. Then when you begin do it lightly and be cautious. If you notice it starting to flake then stop.

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
It doesn't matter on the sanding part. When I paint them, an hour later, I use a flat head screwdriver to scrape the paint off, and then I sand the rest off while it's not so hard. That way I don't have to sand so hard and worry about fubaring the paint on the rest of the valve cover. After you scape the unwanted paint off, bake it for 30 minutes, then let it dry, clear coat it, bake for 10 minutes and let it dry for 2 days. Do not touch it whatesover for 2 days!

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
I like that color, it should turn out great when you get finished.
