i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
take a look at this,it's from an olds 88,not sure what year, thats why i took a picture, i'm going to remove the flat center section,it's easy, just cut it off, and when it is the curve of the skirt matches the hatch bumper perfectly. talking about on the flat part on the bottom. they are too long on the ends that go towards the front of the car, this is easy to fix, they are cut off straight from the factory, so all you have to do is trim to length. they ends after cutting off the center section, line up perfectly where the spare tire well sticks down slightly under the bumper. so you end up with a two piece lip. you wil probably just have to trim slightly around the exaust cutout too. pretty easy stuff. it will just bolt up to the flat lip on the hatch bumper bottom after drilling a few holes.

Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
i have to pull my rear bumper off so i can trim it to match the contour on the end, but holding it up it looks like an extension of the bottom part of the bumper. mine is going to take a lot more trimming on the exaust end,due to the wierd muffler i have on my car,but for a standard muffler i don't think it will be any big deal. i also have that trailer hitch too.
Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
Interesting, hope it looks good after the bit of work making it fit.

Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
am fitting it now, will try to get pics later
Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
ok i'm doing the difficult part first, the part around the muffler, which on my car is under the bumper edge. i have clamped one side, after lining it up, and drilled the screw holes that will hold it in place, while clamped, this insures it goes back on the same way it came off. it had a lot of excess plastic sticking into the inner bumper,so i trimmed it,then cut reliefs on the back side, this helps it bend eaisier. on the muffler side,it's too long where the muffler is, so i had to cut it off, then i have to fit the finished end back on and make it one piece again.
working on lining up the lip

corner,i'll clean up the lip when everything is fitted and finished, then a couple of coats of flexible high build, some wet sanding, and bumper black.

corner, the mudflap sits against this,i'll round it off for a more finished appearance, they sit flush together.

the exaust end, without the end piece in place.

with the end piece, when i'm done with those two pieces, they will look like one

inside of lip clamped in place.i know i need a new steel inner bumper, i need to go to the yard, this one isn't original to the car i think it's from the north

Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
By the looks of things it seems to flow well with the bumper, and looks as if its coming along nicely. I cant wait to see the finished product, thanks for the update.
Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
i'm about to go to napa and get some marson bumper repair compound., i attached the end piece with a piece of aluminum on the back, and counter sunk rivets, so i need to fill the gap and the rivets, then i can spray that piece with high build flex primer and bumper black. then on to the other side which should be much eaisier.
Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
ok back, this is the nappa brand flex bumper repair kit, it's actually made by marson, once you open the box, but it's sold at nappa. this will repair any kind of holes, rips tears, scratches etc in your plastic bumper covers, and other material of the same type.
the kit,it has a generous amount of compound, plus a spreader, mixing sticks, and some screening material for backing while doing the repairs.

the two pieces after being attached together mechanically
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...e/S4020310.jpg
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...e/S4020311.jpg
this compound is mixed half of repair compound, half of activator
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...e/S4020312.jpg
you mix until a consistent blue color
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...e/S4020313.jpg
you then apply like body filler,it's best to wait about two hours before sanding

Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
How did you make the rivet head flush with the surface?
Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
Interesting, looking forward to see the finished product. Can you sand that filler stuff once it's hardened?

caint wait to see it mounted on the car

Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
i'm fitting up all the pieces here on the floor,my knees will never forgive me a million tiny &&^% screws and nuts. after it's attached to the bumper,i think i'll just repaint the lip along with the bumper after i stick it on the car. much eaisier.
Re: i have the solution to the rear lip on the hatchbacks
ok mounted on the bumper, i haven't painted the pieces yet, going to paint the entire bumper at the same time. i'm going to make a piece that goes on the opposite side of the exaust cutout tomorrow. so everything will match.
