Re: New guy with 84 hatch
Hot damn! That thing is super clean! Definitely a good buy! And a stick, FTW! Got any plans for her?
Re: New guy with 84 hatch
Well I have... contingency plans, in case the spending money appears, haha. I've just been dd'ing it while my other beater is in the shop getting upgraded. The main thing I want to address right now is the vacuum system, because it likes to crank up the idle to 2500. I haven't decided whether to try fixing it or just rip it all out like someone here did. The engine is otherwise rock solid though. It's been well cared for.
I would like to freshen the suspension with Spax/Koni. That can wait for now since it rides okay but I can tell the shocks are getting tired. Replacing a couple speakers, antenna, a few trim bits, making a cargo cover, and so on. Just the little things that make a difference in a dd.
Re: New guy with 84 hatch
And I know you're all wondering breathlessly, this is my other beater that I picked up a year ago for $1900 (as it sits in pic 1), a '96 Legacy Brighton AWD.

I fixed some stuff; cleared the headlights; put in a leather wheel, cruise, and tach, and WRX seats.

It's down right now as we get it upgraded to WRX brakes from the stock front discs and rear drums, with an SVX master cyl, and I have a set of WRX wheels that need to be wrapped in rubber and put on. This one has been a long journey of fixing little fiddly crap (like rebuilding the shifter linkages, 10x more of a PITA than you'd think!) but it's really been a fantastic car.
Re: New guy with 84 hatch
Hatch looks good. What are your plans?
Re: New guy with 84 hatch
The idle problem is super common. Usually it's one of those thermowax valves that controls the high idle solenoid. It's screwed into a coolant line on the intake manifold or something like that. Look up thermovalves in the Factory Service Manual. I don't know if you can get new ones or not... But there may be a way to fix it or find another one at a wrecking yard...
Re: New guy with 84 hatch
