I have 88 accord LX-i with the A20A3 motor 5 speed.
You COULD have it machined at a shop for weight reduction. They'll know what to do, i'd hope...How much do our stock flywheels weigh? I thought it was roughly 22lbs...

In Alabama, once your car is over 20 years old, the odometer reading will forever be xxx, xxx, no matter what. That's what my title/registration says.
Do have a question though. Would it make sense after you completely entirely rebuild you motor, to reset your odometer to 000,000? Makes sense to me. Especially, if it was a new motor.

Try Bisimoto.com? They make anything custom nearly except intake manifolds. And they love us 3gee guys with support and direct bolt-on after market parts than any other company out there really. Shoot Randy an Email. He's excellent with customer service.

I believe not. Your sunroof is factory since you have an LX-i; try to find a nice seal from a junkyard.

I believe if you completely disassemble the cluster you can pop them out. The lights are LED's so watch out for that.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I've been doing some reading on the A16A crank.
I've only found people who tossed the idea around. did anyone actually do this? If not was it really possible to swap the crank in, get some custom rods pistons, and a overbore to get some pretty good power out of it?
I mean they said it would be pretty rev crazy, but would I lose power even with that amount of work or would it actually give a bit of power once it was all done, and say maybe even boosted.
And I'm talking a bore of say 83-83.5 *since 84 is dangerous territory*
I mean if its possible and no ones done it, I would give it a try if I can get hold of a A16A crank. sounds fun and pretty different.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
the lights in the cluster are not LEDS, they are small bulbs, if you take the cluster apart, you'll see how they are in there, it's just a matter of drilling a small hole in plastic and adding an LED or a small bulb and socket, radio shack sells them, be careful adding, as the ground on the bulbs for illumination are controlled by the dimmer circuit. you need a separate power and a ground, depending on the sender, or whatever you are running, you'll see on the icon above the blank spot, it's painted black over tinted plastic, you carefully use some 1500 wet/dry sandpaper to polish off the black paint over the icon you want to use, Charlie I was going to take some pictures to show you how the bulbs were installed, in case you ever wanted to do this, but you have no contact info

Other things need to be done before you teach me how to modify LED's. ;)
Also, some lights in the gauges are regular; some are soldered LED's. The ones behind the low fuel light and such are LED's, I'm fairly certain.

nope, all are bulbs, most of them are attached to the circuit board that is on top of the cluster, the bulbs stick through holes above the icon, the low fuel light bulb is on wire leads in a socket, it attaches behind the icon instead of over

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
this is the LED for my voltage monitor installed in the cluster, the hole just below it and just to the right is the bulb socket for the low fuel indicator

So, I just went through the whole leaking sunroof issue... Have you checked all of the drains? I thought that it was my sunroof that was actually leaking. which is a big deal because I live in Washington and it rains 90% of the year, and I come to find out, after trying everything I could think of, that the drain was clogged and the water couldn't drain out.
There are 4 drains, 2 in the front that go down to the back of the front wheel well and 2 that have hoses that run from the back of the sunroof to the trunk. If you pull off the plastic panels in the trunk and you will see 2 hoses on both sides about half the way back. They come stock with little rubber stoppers in them, which are completely unnecessary, and you can take those out and then use an air compressor to push air from the bottom of the hose to the top, you should hear it at the sunroof. If you don't, just get something slightly strong and long (I used the cable from a weight machine, but you can use a wire coat hangar) and clear out the gunk from the hoses.
This may not be what is wrong with your car, but mine was leaking really bad and I thought there was no way that was the issue, but after doing that a month ago (and about 14 rainy days later) there has been no leaks at all. I hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure that as long as it is not touching rubber, you should be fine. I know that Petroleum Jelly will eat through rubber, so that would be a bad plan, but as far as lubing metal on metal contact, I think the consistency would be sufficient lubrication. If I was to try it, I would do it on one door that is not used regularly (just in case, the driver's side back door) and check it daily for corrosion, but I would think this would be a viable option, if there is no rubber.

Did you know that you can make homemade napalm with Petroleum jelly? Just add a little gas and watch it burn for up to 6 hours... You can also use Styrofoam... So, this may not be a viable option... A nice spark or even a little fire and you just added a heat intensifier and increased the longevity of the fire.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
stormplooper is right , petroleum jelly can be pretty flammable when mixed with gas / toluene / or xylene. Styrofoam can be mixed with acetone and have the same effect.
for the wire splices , i think you are better off with some type of di-electric or connector grease, this stuff is usually cheap and they have it at any auto store in small pouches
regular petroleum jelly will not auto ignite ( well it will as with anything given you provide a sh** load of heat) due to its low VOC and vapor pressure.
but back to the door hinge question, i prefer using moly or lithium grease, they have good sticking properties and wont wash off easily. Powdered graphite will work too but wont last as long.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I have noticed that my LX-i has a lot of shuttering going on when I am stopped, it does not happen if I am moving, even slowly, but when I stop, sometimes it is just a little, sometimes it is a lot and loud!
My question is, could this be because of some of the motor mounts going bad?
Also, when I shift from into drive, the car jolts forward, what could be causing this and is there a way to tone it down? I'm pretty sure it is just the catching of the tranny to drive, but I was wondering if fixing the motor mounts might help reduce the intensity of the jolting and, if not, what can I do?
Thanks y'all!
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
white lithium grease on the door hinges, it comes in a tube, as far as the electrical connections use silicone dielectric grease,

whats your idle rpm? id have to lean toward the mounts needing replacement , just think they probably never were replaced and the car is over 20 years old, bushing don't last forever.
id start with the torque mount on the back of the engine , check that for excessive play then check the front mount

2) What happens mechanically or electronically when you slide the temperature slider side to side?
3) Why does my car make a whoosh sound when I remove the gasoline cap?

To Question #1, on hard acceleration The oil will slush side to side and the oil pickup isnt able to get the oil that it needs
To Question #2 The Temp slider should be connected to a cable that will open and close the heater valve
To Question #3 How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? The World May Never know, But any 3rd gen accord I've been near when pulling the gas cap off makes that WOOOSH

I'm guessing it's pressurized for the fuel-injection to work? Anyway, what's a heater valve? Is it open or closed when the heat is on (and vice-versa when the cold is on)?

the pressure in the tank is caused by the evaporative controls, gas vapor isn't allowed to escape into the atmosphere, so the fumes are supposed to be absorbed by the charcoal canister and regulated by the two way valve on top of the tank. The problem is all the tanks on Honda's entire lineup for years tended to over pressurize. A lot of people complained but nothing was ever done. The pressure in the tank has nothing to do with pressurizing the fuel for the carburetor or the FI, LOL. Thats why there are fuel pumps.
the heater valve is opened by a cable and allows coolant to flow through the heater core when you need heat.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!

Yeah, 3 of my 5 mounts are worn, from what the mechanic says, 2 in the back and 1 in the front. I know that this could attribute to it, but I wanted to make sure. Also, my idle is about 1 to 1 1/2k, which seems normal... I also noticed this morning that if I use just a little weight/force to hold down the dash in front of the passenger seat, this stops the rattle.
Any thoughts what a good price for motor mounts would be? Individually or all 3... My dad said that we could probably do it ourselves with the tools he's got, but I don't want to mess up this amazingly well maintained car if it's not gonna cost too much to just bring it in and fix it.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
The mounts are easy, no need to pay for something that you can do yourself. Use this as a learning experience with the added benefit of bonding time with your dad. I lost my dad last year. What I wouldn't give for more time with my dad.

Speaking of gas tanks, I get the same hiss from the pressure, never really bothered me, but when I filled up the tank for the first time since I got the car, the gas will go all the way up to the cap, sometimes into the threading for the cap, and when I pulled out the pump, gas came out of the pump after I pulled it out of the gas tank (about 8oz. of fluid) and poured all over the ground. Is there something I can do to stop this from happening again? Is this normal for these older cars? Obviously, I can stop pumping before it is full, but I have no way of knowing when it is full until the pump shuts off. Is there a sensor or something that is supposed to stop that from happening?
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
There's a pressure sensor in the gas pump that monitors how full your tank gets. It's supposed to shut itself off.

My emissions are done, I passed, so I may be wrong (I will check it when I get out to my car later) ... I never have to do emissions again (WOOHOO!) since I already got it done, passed with flying colors. But, maybe, now that you mention it, my idle is just too low and I need to adjust that... Maybe that is what is causing the rattle... How would I increase that?
UPDATE
Ok, so my idle is right around 1k and I forgot to mention that if I put the car in neutral, it gets rid of the shutter, but when I put it back into drive or leave it in drive at a stop, that is when it is shuttering.

Is the issue that you can't get it off because it will not turn or something else? If the issue is that it will not turn, more than likely the place that put your filter on probably didn't put any oil on the seal and obviously didn't put it on hand tight. There are tools that can get it off, but don't get the one that is the ring with a handle on it, those are useless! The one you want is an extension to a wrench that you can adjust the tightness... It will have a loop and a long metal shaft that is usually swivel-able.
Usually, it is best to just take it to a shop, ask them to either loosen the filter for you (because they usually have the right tools) or you can ask them to do the oil change, but make sure to only hand tighten the filter... Then take it off when you get home and put oil on the seal then put it back on hand tight, don't let it sit on there because you don't know if they did it or not and you will run into the same problem.

There are tools that can get it off, but don't get the one that is the ring with a handle on it, those are useless! The one you want is an extension to a wrench that you can adjust the tightness... No, but it can cause a pull to one side.

Use an impact gun. Failing that, use the hillbilly impact method in this thread. Try removing it from the bracket and holding the old filter with a Channel-Lock or something. Anything else is going to bend the bracket.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
you may need a new crush washer when you put in the new filter, sometimes the new filter will have one with it

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Hey guys, so I came across some coilovers on a local forum and the user says they're for 88-00 civics and integras. Would these fit on my 89 lxi?
They're "megan racing coilovers"

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Ya 2tables they will any 86 to 89 parts for a suspension will work all the suspension parts are the samethere was a small change to the rear I think but shocks and struts never changed there desing I bought some no names for a 86 to a 00 they went on like warm butter over bread nice find in my oppion
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Generally, I don't believe Civic and Integra suspension parts are interchangeable with our Accords. You'd have more luck with a Prelude.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Hey guys is there a d series vtec swap that is a close enough fit in the 86 accord lxi hatchback that there wouldn't be any or a lot of moding

if you are going to go to the trouble of a swap, do the JDM B20 for this car, plenty of people here can help you with questions, and it will put that D series to shame

one of the biggest mistakes Honda ever did was not putting the B20 in the USDM Accords, it was a great car, and probably would have had a much bigger following today with that engine

yeah but they put the f series motor in them which were not bad but lack power. i think the H22 would be a good motor for the accord since prelude and accords are hardly worked on if they are worked on they rice them out. sucks that the accord is considered a family car then a suitable street car like the civic or prelude and integra's.:dunno:

i mean back in the day they might have not been considered as much a family car with the more powerful engine. the hatch is definitely not a family car, it's hard to put anyone but small kids and short adults in the back, plus you remove two doors on the hatch and coupe and it changes the cars character

well true but the A series is good enough for these car shit 120hp stock for a late 80's car is not bad if you think about it. yeah 2drs make it look sporty.

the hatch really isn't that different then the first gen Tegs, but with more horsepower and torque, and a better suspension yet the teg is considered a sports car, makes no sense, these cars could have really done well with the extra power to match the handling. It's just hard to look at a four door as a sports car, even the new four doors like the Altima, it's funny how crazy people went over the dual cams in the civic when it hit the streets here, and it already existed in the accord in Japan
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Honestly I don't think the accord hatchback ever got its day everytime I go looking I see a 4 door sedan or a coupe the hatchbacks are few and far between which gave it the apperance of the family car I wish they would have carried the hatchback up into the 90s giving the street drivers more appeal to it and like you all said dropped a bit more horse power
-

it became the Integra coupe, they weren't going to carry two nearly identical cars,so the accord hatchback was dropped,it became redundant
-

http://graphics.stanford.edu/~lucasp...a-leftside.jpg
they should have kept the Accord hatch instead, better suspension and more power, the three g lines are so obvious in these cars
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
The Accord hatch was dropped because the fastback hatch bodystyle was going out of...style. That's why in 1991 it was replaced with a station wagon which held up until the same thing happened. Now there's a crossover; let's hope that thing doesn't last as long.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Maybe we can get lucky and they will replace the crossover with a new accord hatch....not that I'm biased or anything...
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
lets be honest we are all a little bias I agree with all the remakes of old cars comming back lets hope to see the new accord hatchback

this is why the Acura Integra which was almost identical, it has all kinds of style cues taken from the third generations, was launched to huge sales? it wasn't the body style, it was having two cars that looked the same, the older model lost out, this is done pretty universally in car companies, Honda has always sold hatchbacks well, look at the sales of Civic Hatches, I hope they bring back the style too, retro is big right now, time for another Accord hatch

I think if the Accord hatch is reincarnated it's going to look retarded like the CTS coupe. Haha, I just realized that the CTS coupe is actually the Catera Touring Sedan coupe.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Can anyone tell me what the specific bulb numbers are used in a 1989 Honda Accord Hatchback Lxi glovebox, interior ceiling light, and whatever the light behind the "passenger-seatbelt-is-not-buckled" indicator above the rear view mirror is called.
The guy at autozone told me a Sylvania DE3022 LL would work for the glovebox, however thats a 13V 4.9W bulb and the chilton repair manual I have says it's a 12V bulb that goes there in the glovebox. I don't want to open it to try it in case it's the wrong one, so I can return it. I haven't found any luck searching for what bulbs would fit there on the internet.

I've been all around and under my 89 Accord LXi. Still looking for a grease fitting. Am I missing them or is everything "lubricated-for-life"? Should I throw away my grease gun? Just wondering? She runs fine, like to keep it that way!

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
If my constant-velocity boot has disintegrated, should I replace the whole axle and everything or can I just replace the boot?

LOL. I did the same thing when I bought my first Honda. I was like, :WTF? There are no Zerk fittings on these cars. Every joint is either supported by a rubber bushing, or a sealed ball joint.
Welcome to the board, by the way.

You can replace the boot, but it's a GIGANTIC mess. I would replace the axle.

I have P195/60R14 85H tires on my coupe (standard/factory size) on the factory 14x5.5" wheels (technically from a Prelude, I guess). Will my tires fit on 14x5" steelies from a 1988 Civic?

I'm trying to find a piece of interior that is from the hatchback version of the 86-89 accord. Its that folding cover thing that goes over the trunk contents so people can't see into the contents of the trunk underneath it. Can anyone tell me the name of this folding interior piece is?

you can get moog suspension parts for this car with grease fittings, I have the tie rod ends from them, and being able to force grease through them, and being able to force out the crud, makes a big difference

good luck, you can get them from the junkyard if you are very lucky, the last time I checked at Honda was years ago, and just the folding piece was over 500 dollars, if you have the brackets from the piece that lifts up with the hatch, it's very easy to make one, you may have to get creative in your case too, they are made from heavy molded cardboard with upholstery stuff over them, thats it

Well, I have 2/3rds of the folding piece, I'm just missing the part that is closest to the hatch window. I might end up just making one if I can't find one... does the folding piece have a actual name?
Thanks for the info!

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Did left hand drive coupes/hatches/aerodecks ever have a mirror delete plate for the left hand side mirror? (Like the right hand side mirror delete plate for our DX coupes and hatches.) If not, how hard would it be to replicate the passenger side one in a "mirrored" (ha) version for the driver's side?

you need to use a photo hosting site like photobucket to host your pictures, paste the img code in the thread, you don't have a garage because you aren't a foundation member

you know you have to be Chip Foose to get away with no mirrors lol

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I like the look and for a while I drove without a passenger side or rear view mirror which made me turn and look more and depend on my mirrors less.
