Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
I got that aluminum paint by accident a while ago. That stuff is crazy! I painted my egr-blockoff plate with it and right after I sprayed it, it was about 40* cooler than it was outside.
It's gonna see the car wash quite a bit. Does that aluminum paint stick to aluminum?

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
I figure I should start working on a box while I'm not doing anything else productive...:slap:
Got the max dimensions tonight so I can start designing something wicked.
33"W - 16"H (might do less so I can fit it closer to the back-seat) - 24"D
That makes the max net volume I can go 6.6cu.ft., which would be good for a 4th order bandpass.... Hmm....
I can either try to get a bandpass to work right, or I can just go with my original plan of 120-150 sq.in. of port area!

Are you going to use 3/4" MDF or something else for the box material? if you use the 3/4" stock just be sure you're making those dimensions the inside dimensions, so add 1.5" total for your outside dimension. I made that mistake once on a box for a friend of mine and was pissed at myself for being so damn stupid.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
Yep! Way ahead, there. 31.5 x 14.5 x 22.5 = 10276.9/1728 = 5.9 cu.ft.
It's a little much for my subs, but I'm glad I got room for improvement.
Yeah, I do all the "extreme" designs at the local audio shop, and so far, my cut measurements (even the angles) have been perfect. The guy who runs it messes with me sometimes and says "I had to redo a couple measurements" and I say "BS (long version)" and he goes Nahhhh, I'm playin'... Came out really good!
(And I don't use any programs other than finding my port length)
I think I'm getting a table saw for Christmas, so now I'll have all the time I want to do some crazy stuff with it. I think I'm gonna flare my port, too.
Like this.

Only it's gonna be 31.5" instead of this 14" flare. Hehe.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
I got box plans from the man Pete K. hisself for a 13.5" W7, so I think I might tweak with these plans and see if I can come up with a good box for my 12's.
-
Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
how the hell did you get that curve on that port? It almost looks like corrugated cardboard. Did you kerf cut the back to make the bend? Please explain.
...and yeah, a W7 is just silly. i want one sooooooo bad.
-
Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
That is a really nice looking curve on that port, some nice woodworking!

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
u better get some videos of this thing knockin the mirrors off of the cars parked next to you ;)

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
That's not my box. It's a guy on ROE who called himself "Hugh G. Rection." lol...
He was also SSI on Carstereo about 5-6 years ago. A legend, in my book. Got a 12" Mojo to do 156 on the AC with a Hifonics amp. That would be about 147-152 on the TL...
I can make it curve just like that... I hope... heh.
What you do is cut the 3/4" MDF at about 11/16" and every 3/8" down the board, then you resin it solid. Hopefully I don't waste too many boards doing this, so I'll have to figure out a way to do it. Maybe a port in the middle of the box seperating the 2 12's. I'll still probably have it sub-up, port-back...
-
Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
Damn it... I can't decide on a box to make... Soooo many good options... I could probably sell it for what the wood cost, so I should just design one...
I made a box for a 12" Planet Audio Big Bang that was almost as loud as my current setup... That was a Phase Box that was really close to being considered a 6th order. He had a Cadence 2000 watt amp and it was crazy how loud it was. I think I may do that again. ;)
Gonna work on my brother's rig tomorrow and Saturday, then go wheeling on Sunday. So I'll probably do something to my car Sunday night...

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
great so since your in a box making mood. Design me ojne for my hatch that holds 2 jl audio 12w6 at 1000 watts 1.5ohms. Id love to trade those for a 10w7 or even my jl audio 8w6 for that matter

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
i want a box too for my 10 inch alpine type R

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
a bit off topic, i lost my papper work on some Pyle pro WL1280's and WL15160's? would you know where to get the parameters for those?
-
Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
Wow... Off-brand parameters are hard to find. I can look real quick. I looked for a while and couldn't even find the speaker. You should try to find a newer speaker with the same "Specs" and copy those. They will be close enough to count.
Mike and Jessy, what kind of music?

mostly hip hop/ rap...sometimes rock...what i really want to do is buy a 2nd 10 inch sub...my amp can push 2 of them with no problem.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
i will be hitin up this man for a box once i buy a sub my amp can handle :)

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
maybe I'm going too far by saying this guys, but I'm sure Bass_Man is on the same page. Custom boxes have a decent amount of thought and skill/craft work into them, so they're not cheap.
To be honest, the Alpine R's are what I consider a first step into a semi-pro sub. The Alpine S is a decent thumper for a decent economy build. ...but then again, like Jesse with your R, if you're semi satisfied with your R in the off-the-shelf box, once you get a custom box that's made specifically to the specs of your sub and to pull as much clean thump out of it, you'll think you have a completely new pro-grade sub.
Mike, are your W6's V1 or V2. Also you mention 1.5 Ohm. ...I'm kinda confused there because (and no I didn't go researching them just now, just working off some stale memories of them from back in the day so I could be VERY wrong) while yes they are DVC subs, I though they only came in 4 and 6 Ohm so you can use them in a single, dual or triple (6 Ohm) setup. So I thought you could only get either 4, 2 (dual 4 Ohm, or triple 6) out of them. ...but this might just show my ignorance and really old knowledge of this stuff.
...but for the guy that dares to drop the coin and step up to something like a pair of 10 W7's, I applaud you and would LOVE to hear them bumping in a custom box complimented by a set of Boston Z components and powered by something silly like an old McIntosh... ...oh damn i think i just pissed myself.
Shit guys I'm sorry this thread has gotten so off-topic from Bass' build thread. Bass, if you want me to break a box discussion thread out of this and slap it in the Audio section, just let me know. ...but if you don't care about it going o/t then neither do I.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
Your mostly correct their mark. The v1 dvc jl audio w6 line came in dual 3 ohm coils. You can in theory from this run them single load loads which is what I did before at 1.5ohms each. This would be in series dividing the total number of resistance in half. From their you can take the 2 and run those in parallel adding the loads together making a single 3 onm load. These were always run in sets of 2 so you can run a single 1 omh load.
Mine are the cersion 1 and in my opinion better then the v2 but thats just me. I would love a 10w7. I used to borrow one from a co worker with a 1000 watt slash series amp on it. It hit hard and low and was super clean for a OTC box it came with. From previous setups Ive still got my 12's and 8's left. I havent found a good enough box for the 3 8's where they pound as hard as Id like. They do have a very subtle punch though. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong. I do have the factory biuld sheets including all specs if someone wants to try to biuld a box. Im learning that my old school soundstreams that I lived off in the past are relics and although super strong also very heavy wasters. i think it may be time to upgrade the powerhouses as well.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
JL does wierd impedences because they want you to use their amps...
I do designs for $25 at the shop, but I don't mind making designs for the fellow 3g'er for free! Plus I could get in trouble... haha.
ZOMG! McIntosh H/U, Zapco H/M amp, Boston mids with Rainbow Highs, Zapco sub amp and JL w6's would be an eargazm.
If you wouldn't mind moving a couple post and tweaking with the site's flux capasiter, it would be cool to get a "Box" thread going on. I don't mind threadjacking, but when I get back rolling on my hatch and people want to know what crazy stuff I've done to it, they might get turned away from all the box discussion...
It's perfectly fine right now, though. I'll probably start working on my Honda Monday or something.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
Umm... Buy some emblems!! haha.
-
Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
it wont let me pm you since for some reason your listed as a guest. Ill just include the specs.
For a HB design 2 jl audio 12w6 in a single enclosure with a baffle wall between them making 2 single 1.125 ft3 enclosures.
2.250 ft3. Qtc=1.07, sealed box. listed and tested SPL Reference 1 watt 30hz-87.9, 40hz-93.2, 50hz-96.3hz, 60hz-97.5.
Im not sure if they would sound better facing forwards against the rear of the car or against the rear seat. Facing rearwards against the back seat. Also if the wedge design kills the air reflection inside the box how do you work around that? id like an amp rack biult onto the box as well or maybe Ill biuld on onto the spare tire well.
Ill be running them at no less then 300 watts rms each or 1000 watts in combo. Let me know what you come up with. I was a carpenter for a few years and have all the right tools just lack the know how to make a killer custom box with bracing and such.
-
Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
I haven't had time to do anything on the computer today... Most the time it's louder facing the rear. I love the wedge boxes, and they are the best box you can get/make for the JL's. They are just hard to design without the $80 box programs.
Did you try PMing me on this thread, or my "Audio Input" thread?
-
Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
PM sent. I must have tried a different thread because it worked right off on this thread. Thats wierd I didnt think it mattered.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
Just with me and 2ndGenGuy. heh.

Re: Bass Man's got a HATCH!
Well... My tow-truck driver buddy found 1 or 2 (can't tell what he meant, but I'm pretty sure 2) 3g's today. I think he said 1 runs really good, but the tranny is out(Said it's an 88-89, but I don't know if he can tell the difference, yet), and the other one is an LX-i, but there is something wrong with an/the injector(s).
If the LX-i has less than 150k miles, I'll probably take the motor, harness, dash?, fuel lines and tank, and see if I can make some magic! I love the sound of an EFI with little mods.
If they are the same year and it looks like I can Frankenstien a decent car, I'll sell it to someone ;) Who wants a 3g for cheap?
