How You Change Brake Pad On 3gee?

i knew i should have paid more attention when my dad did this. but heres the thing. since its like the holidays, i cant seem to find anyone to change my brake pads. other than big name places that want to charge over $80 for labor. the guy who would put em in is gone somewhere. he was only charging $35!!! so i know i need to take the caliper off the bracket thing and i think i might need to know a lil more after that. sucks. will i need to bleed the brakes? if so i may get someone to help me on that. i think thats the only thing that i dont want to mess up on. i already have the pads. i think their like some kind of metalic kind. they were the more expensive ones with lifetime warrenty i think.

Changing brake pads is very easy. First go get some brake quiet lubricant (blue or orange stuff) and a C clamp from wal mart.

1) Take off wheels
2) Remove lower caliper bolt and swing the caliper up
3) Remove old pads
4) Put in new pads with some brake quiet lubricant at the back of the pads (not the side clamping the rotors !!!!) and some on the shims
5) Use C-clamp with an old brake pad on the caliper piston to push it in (check brake fluid reservoir in case of overflow. If it does, just take some fluid out with turkey baster or spoon, straw, etc)
6) Flip caliper back down and tighten lower caliper bolt to spec.

so no need to bleed brakes? if so, great cuz my friend wants to get this done tomorrow. i have a new tool set so now i guess i can try it out.

BTW download the service manual ! it's in the FAQ's ! and then you can do these easy jobs by your self !

and yes no brake bleeding as long as you don't open the brake line !

You don't HAVE to bleed the brakelines, but it helps to open the drainer thing on the caliper a LITTLE to get the piston in the caliper back into it's rest position to get the caliper back on with the new pads.

Oh, and don't do that c-clamp/brake pad crap - just spring for the correct tool at the AutoZone or parts dealer near you. You'll need it the next time you do the brakes anyway.

Doing the brake pads is one of those things that seem's kinda hard, but it really isn't. When your done you'll get a sense of accomplishment knowing you can do it is pretty cool. Plus saving the money is nice to:D

now i have the problem of my wheels wont come off. last time it did this, i had to loosen the lug nuts and spin the tire. it worked. im taking it to someone in the morning cuz my grandma threatened to take it off the insurance if i fucked it up.

Get under the car and hit the wheels with a mallet (and the front too if needed)

no need top do that!
take a c~clamp(preferrably small) take one of the old pads(preferrably) put it over the cylinder and bring that piston back that way alot easier!

just swing your leg and hit the wheel at the side and the it will fall ! :D :D i always do that !

MoonScryer there is no need to use a special tool to push the pad and piston back. A c-clamp works more then fine and most people have these laying around. Also hondaboy what do you mean the wheel is not coming off? If the lugnuts are off there is no reason the wheel should not just easily slide off.

dude your grandma threatened you.... thats funny- just knock the wheel a lttle, and it should come off... after you ut the calipers back on make sure you pump the brakes to build up pressure, or when you start to drive off, your gonna freak when your brakes start to not grab, I know i forgot one time in shop and my old car wouldn't stop and I wa goin toward the wall... it was scary.

hmm, this is an old thread. i see yall are still giving tips. thanx, but i already had them fixed in January. then i wrecked the 3gee. its fixed now. i do need to replace the rear brake shoes. they dont stop as good as they should. i will probley do this sometime soon. my friends dad will help me with this cuz he duz breaks all the time.

break shoes are fun. Just make sure you have the right tool to rls the shoes from the drum. Forgot what its called but it spins the star screw (not a proper term). =)

Hey mike why don't you read the msg right before mine....."i do need to replace the rear brake shoes. they dont stop as good as they should.".....and while "pilars" could be used alot of time its easier just to buy this 3 dollar tool that is bent just perfect so its an ease to use as you notice hondayboy wasn't really learned in changing the front breaks....

Dude calm down a bit. I have a fun job ahead of me. I might have a guy help (he'll still charge me money for labor though) I'm getting rotors (haven't decided what I can afford yet), calipers, pads, rear brake drums, and shoes. I might need to get the e-brake adjusted or get a new cable also. I thought there was a how to on doing brakes but I checked and nothing. That might be a good idea for someone to make. I know it would save me a bundle. I'm at work right now so I can't download the shop manual. I suppose that would explain it good.

ask someone who has a fast connection to download it for you ( teh whole thing and burn it into a CD for you ! )

how many megabytes is it? I think my cds only hold like 700mb. I'll download it to my computer when I get home. Got enough space on the new dell :D But I'll burn it so I can have it just for safe keeping.

300 MB ! i keep a CD copy in the car and one at home and on my hard drive ! :D

when you change the front brake pads, do the rotors need to be turned each time? how do i determine if the rotors need turning or replacing? if only one rotor is bad, do i need to change ONLY the bad one, or replace both front rotors?

also, how big of a c-clamp do i need? walmart sells a 1", 2", and a 3" c-clamp. should i just goto the local auto parts store and buy a c-clamp there instead?

It's better to get then turned, but not necessary. If you don't get wobble when you step on the brakes at certain rpms, then the rotors are fine.
You'll need a dial indicator (i think tht's what it's called) or a micrometer at different sections.
If one rotor is bad, better change both.
c-clamp, not too sure but 3" should be able to do it or if you have a big enough plyers. Just buy and return.

sorry if im retarded...but...how do you bleed the breaks....

what would you call a wobble? under normal braking my car is fine. if i have to stop sooner than expected or hard braking, my whole steering wheel starts shaking like the rumble pak on n64 or those dual shock controllers for PS. does that mean, i need my rotors turned?

just went to kragan today. $9.99 for 6 inch c-clamp so i'll probably get that. i'm hoping to get this done within the next 3 weeks.

yeah. i think thats un even wear on your breaks.

6inch would work as long as its big enough to fit over. And its usually best to get the rotars/drums turned when you replace the breaks if you see uneveness or any type of gouges in it. Just take them to any local tire/brake shop and they will be able to tell you if their turnable. usually only like $4 each.
