making a cold air intake...

i just posted about how i removed the resonator on my car, im thinking i will put it back in and then i will make it into a "scoop"
how would i do a cold air from there, where would the filter for the air go, (if i used one of those "proformance" ones)

of course i have seen them for non-cold-air cars but how would i do it for cold air.

also, what would be the best idea (for use of parts) for making this cold air intake?

Okay, I'm not sure if he wants a CAI or a short ram intake with a hoodscoop. I think having a short ram with a hoodscoop would be best. IMO I have no bias though :D I just prepped my hoodscoop finally and i'm going to prime it and paint it tomorrow. And hopefully make a airbox to go around the cone filter soon. I don't really know what way I'm going to face the scoop (make it a cowl or a just a scoop) I live in MN so there's lots of snow and rain. I have a K&N precharger filter over the cone filter to stop the water from entering the intake. I still would like a bypass valve for the intake though.

can i really use a 94-97 CAI and it will work on my 89lxi coupe??

YA you can use a 94-97 accord cai intake on our car. Don't even have to move the battery to the turnk! Someone on here has pics of it done use SEARCH to find it.

The Weapon R intake is NOT a CAI, it is a short ram intake. While it is better than the stock intake system, a true CAI will always make more power than a short ram. CAI's are worth the extra effort.

you can find the 94-97 accord COLD AIR INTAKES on ebay for $39.99, and then like $25 shipped with insurance, i am thinking about trying it out when i have a few extra $$$'s

I just finished mine using a cross between a 92 civic aem intake and a 03 teg bombz intake it was fun losts of cutting but my batterys still in the origonal position pritty much and the stock hole was big enough it also seems to have a buit more pep.

i dont know why people wanna buy a cold air intake from another car, spend money around like 150 bucks or even 100 bucks, then Cut it and modify it and MAKE it fit our 3g? Make ur own, seriously make ur own. Follow the website and ur all set.

Jim told me that the Inner diameter of the TB is 2.5 inches, so all u gotta get a 180 degree U Mandrel bent tube and follow the insturctions, u would be glad u did it.

I got my cai with filter and tubes for 48 shipped and it is allready ceramic coated in and out after an hour drive it is still nice and cool

I went to auto zone and bought a civic intake tube and a filter, that was a mistake! I put it on and cut it about 5 inches to make it fit...I went for a test drive and it sounded like complete a$$! My intake sounds better when I took of my hose from my air box to my wheel weld....

Yea intakes are not about sound they are about peformance.

I got the autozone spectre for the carb. I'd say it sounded beefier than stock and smoother than a flipped lid. Performance = better response and pickup. Begs a few questions from people who ride in the car too.

yeah I see a diff but I am used to my "other" sound that I had when I took off my pipe....

how can i prevent water from going in a hood scoop?

I know of people using special foam filters in them that can be removed and wroung out.

I went on ebay and checked out the 94 accord cold air intakes. They are just about all different. I'm not sure which one would be best. They have different diameters. Some are one piece and others are two. There is also short air rams. Please help me pick the right one. ;)

Justin, Look on ebay for the 90 to 93 accord 4cyl cold air intakes. from the picd i have seen thay look like they can be made to fit our cars with very little mods.. and thye are a hell of a lot cheaper that the custom one i had made... I love my Stainless Steel CAI and im glad I had a shop make it just for my car.. hehehehe good luck in your bidding....

ok, my q is just a tad off the topic. what exactly is that piece, from the filter box to the engine, that branches off and points towards the front? this is a stock setup on the 89 lxi, that i'm reffering to of course. what is that pieces purpose and is it necessary to have it? been wondering for a while.

If you are talking about the stock intake setup then the part you are taliking about is a resonator tube and is not needed. is what you are talking about the part i have circled in the picture link below??

I have seen turfnnsurf's intake system and its the most cleanest CAI i have ever seen. IT was perfectly made and flawless. I saw this at NJ meet and i am sure everyone who came to the meet would agree with it. Instead of buying an Intake for another car and then 'trying' to fit it in ur car is just a waste of time and ur money. rather spend it on something good and get it right the first time. I am sure maurice would agree with me on this based on his short ram intake that he has.

I used a Civic 3 inch short ram (ebay) and a custom cut 90 degree (actually whole pipe was 180 degrees) 3 inch pipe from J.C. Whitney.

The short ram part is lightweight aluminum and the other half is aluminized (I think) steel. That half is heavy.

I made mine from mandrel bend 2 1/2" pipe. I couldn"t believe the gains I got. Gas mileage went up to about 4 miles more on the hwy. I cleaned my injectors and changed the "o" ring and gasket the other day and could tell my engine starts up quicker.

I didn't have to relocate my battery. I just had to move it over a little bit. But my battery is smaller than others.

that looks awsome man. By the way, why did u go with the rubberized look and texture instead of the ceramic? oh yeah like said above, ur engine bay needs some serious help. shit load of engine degreaser and power wash it good :D

I went with the rubberized look because, the heat resistant paint I had needed to be cured in an oven and a that was not possible and I also had some rubberized paint leftover from when I did my trunk with it.

Don't you think it should do as well if not better than the ceramic stuff?

If anyone cares, you can get this stuff for about $6 from Wal-Mart(keep in mind that it comes in a larger can than your average spray paint).

good thinking on that, but how is the temperature rating on that. I have a can of that in my garage and i sprayed a good deal on the gas tank when i changed mine. That shit is good. I got it when it was just 4 bucks in Walmart.

I couldn't find any temp ratings on the can but, it does withstand the heat under my hood and the pipe is cool to the touch. The alloy short-ram half was slightly warm (as warm as a person's forehead with a fever) but the steel part going into the bumper area was cold (like steel).

I used a bunch of PVC piping. then i bought a cold air filter removed, the filter from the air box, and ran the cold air in he hole by the battery! it fits in perfectly. i used 2 incg piping also.. i nitice a nice diff in the power

I heard that makes a custom toxic fumigation setup. Something about engine bay high temps releasing deadly fumes. But then I dont really know...

I will be converting my car to EFI in a couple of days and I'm trying to figure out how I should make a CAI. I have looked at the how to on making one. I have seen some with some kind of filter looking thing usally in the middle of the CAI and a lot of CAI's with out this. Do you really need one of these? What does it do? Also I want to move my battery to the trunk and was looking for any tips on doing this.:help: When I'm done I will try to send some before and after pics.

The filter is a by-pass valve. Its in case you go through a puddle of water your intake doesn't suck it up. Water in your intake is not good. :(

exactly, turfnnsurf had a shop make a 3inch custom welded intake that maurice (Chronoco) also got it from him. That wedge diaphram thingie is the bypass valve like mentioned above. I wont recommend it if ur filter is pretty close to ur frame. cause i heard someone say that u gotta be careful if u wanna make a bypass valve or any sort.

moving ur battery to the rear is not a pain at all, all u need to do is get a kit like Summit battery kit or something, run the 2gauge wire down the passenger side and thru the firewall or what not and clamp it tight with the given eye hole connector and join it where the stock cable is.

When i ordered my AEM bypass valve it came w/ instructions saying that the bypass will put a small dent in the power gains of a CAI. It recomends you take it off when racing.
Has anyone here noticed that?

of course the bypass valve is gonna make ur CAI a little inefficient cause the air flow is not smooth in the pipe, u get a small amount of turbulance once u hit the gap aand also the bypass valve is like a foamy spring. in the sense ur lower intake half is firm around the frame and the one near the intake manifold is allowed to move, so if u look close, ur bypass valve is expanding and contracting whenever the engine revs. but it can be neglected if u know what ur doing. Thats why MOST of the CAI (off the shelf) dont come with a bypass valve.

So guys should I really get a bypass valve for my CAI. I should have my EFI conversion done my Sunday and I want to put on that CAI A.S.A.P. Right now I have my parts car all torn appart and I just need to start cleaning up all the parts and do some painting, then I can start work on the actual conversion!:)

Nah man, dont spend money on it. Just do a regular set up for the CAI. its no biggie. thats fully IMO.
