Econo all motor rebuild pics

i know its been a while since i've been on the board but its nice to see that the community is growing, but anyways just here to update on some cool A20 stuff. and yes for all u cam gear people they have been ordered and are being made as we speak and will be available shortly.

Well about 2 months ago the a20 that put down 140 wheel hp and with 180k on the clock developed a rod knock which called for a new rebuild. Given the situation we found a good opprotunity to make some nice motor improvements. Just keep in mind that this engine is in no way an all out race motor and is intended to be a daily driver. The new specs on the motor are as fallows:

Standard Ph4 1mm overbore pistons
Stock Rods ARP rod bolts
83.7mmx91mm
Stock valves/springs/retainers
Welded Combustion chambers
P&P head
P&P B16a intake manifold
60 or 63mm overbored LS TB
256/270 cam and probably later on the race cam
Chipped P75 Ecu

This engine is planed to run on 91 octane and pass smog. The welded combustion chambers will give the engine an estimated 10-10.5:1 compression ratio.

From one b16 intake manifold user to another, how did you account for the EGR valve not being there..... I get this question all the time so I thought I would beat everyone to it..... :lol:

Plug it and forget it.. ECU probably doesn't have EGR in it's table, if I'm right on the p75.

Have to agree we have one friggin strange motor. man.... never really paid close attention to the valves, but jesus, our intake valve looks really friggin weird, no wont our cars dont breathe good on high rpms, look at the size of the damn exhaust valve. :thumbdown

I wish one day my motor would look like that. Its gonna be a competition of where i am gonna get my motor rebuilt, Its either from Sean or from Openloop. hmm..... who has more goodies, for maximum pwr output street legal car with satisfactory monetary requirement. :) :cool:

i cant imagine how its gonna pass emissions without EGR, cause the only reason we have it is for stupid Emissions. also, we dont have to worry about it failing emissions if the ecu dont not incorporate EGR in it?

Have you landed on a price to do the head prep? Weld chambers, P&P, valve job and surface?

one question, it that crank pully aluminum??

Is it better to weld the head to increase compression, than to create a dome on the piston... I'm thinking it's to keep the piston weight down...

Well actually the ECU will notice that it's gone, why do you think there is a code for it when it goes bad.... When the ECU detects that it's gone then usually the car will idle really high.... :cool:

i think i might have read your post wrong, but did u guys reprogram the ECU or something?

Well, I didn't reprogram my ECU but I can't speak for Openloop...... But I wish I could....

well the ecu still has egr but its not used. Welding the head was done actually becuase it was cheaper. with the odd size bore there was no oem pistons available to up compression. and yes that crank pulley is aluminum.

edit:p75 ecu doesn't have egr. The auto LS uses an egr. i dunno what i'm talking about up there.

Well, how was the hack done to the ECU so that the EGR is not being used and is it something simple that anyone can do???

how much would you sell another aluminum crank pully for?

You can also add some quench to the chamber with welding, which can reduce detonation with high compression. It looks like they actually decreased chamber volume while unshrouding the valves a bit. That's a good trick! :)

I'd be concerned about the strength of the stock pistons, but if your going to stay all motor (hence the "econo" part), they should work well.

Is it me Mike or do your pistons look like the are a flat top? Cause If they are that alone should raise compression about 10 to 1.


Cause I know my stock pistons still had a bowl shape to them. I even rebuilt a shortblock with 20 over stock replacements and they still had a bowl shape to the piston top.( which some lucky guy on the board got)


just wondering cause tha flat top looking replacement piston would definately not be a stock replacement.

yea my pistons had a lip around the side but that was only 8.6:1

the pistons are slightly dished. remember the overbore itself will raises compression probably about .1-.2 aswell. The head was CCed at 44 i believe. anyone know what the CC of a stock head is?? So i think its gonna be somewhere around 10.5:1 or maybe a little higher

yea I'm not sure you will have to check the cylinder PSI when you get it running to see how high it is.

Is anyone gonna answer the EGR question?

Im pretty sure its only if the gasket is exposed beyond the metalic part surrounding the cylinders, say if the bore was too big for the gasket or the chamber was too big. Ive never heard of chamber welding but then again Im new to this motor building business. That setup looks gooood. Counting down the days til the shop gets done with my motor.
