Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammed"
got this valve cover from the JY.. i stripped the paint, sanded and cleaned up up before spraying with "Rustoleum 7218 Dark Bronze Hammered".. or as i'm calling it Gunmetal Hammered since bronze makes you think of orange/brown more than dark grey.. plus 'gunmetal' is more baddass than 'dark grey' or 'dark bronze' :D

yes i will sand off the raised bits.. though it looks pretty clean as it is imo :)

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
looks good....install it now...and get an OEM gasket for it.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
i just got a new gasket a year ago.. can i reuse it or should i get a new one
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
Try it and if it doesn't work get a new one. I would reuse it.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
bake it in the oven, just like BITESIZE did
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
lol.. maybe i should.. except then my apt will be filled with nasty paint fumes i think :barf:
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
It really doesn't stink the house up. Just turn the hood fan above the oven on. Makes a huge differance and will make the paint feather together to a glossy finish. Damn, I need to get Bullards B20 valve cover. I'm so damn busy!!

i reused mine on my dx...started to leak...and it still leaks....i have to go get a whole upper half gasket kit from honda.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
was the dx gasket less than a year old?
and bitesize at what temp & how long do u bake it for? it looks good as it is but if baking it will help it last longer i might try it.. though just turning the oven on stinks up the place lol even with the fan

if its stil nice and flexible and has no cracks you should be good to go
justmake sure everything is clean both in the groove where it sits in the valve cover and the cylinder head surface.
the cover looks good get it on an engine to see how it looks.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
Sweet! I wanna paint mine soon.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
thanks everybody :D it really turned out even better than i expected so that makes me happy
another pic for now.. I'm gonna wait for it to fully dry before putting it on the car

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
That looks really good. Now sand off the raised parts and it would look even better.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
Looks Great :D
just sand the lettering and Bake It :D

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
I pretend it's a frozen pizza. Extra crispy is how I like it. lol 400 for about 30 minutes, a little more than cooking a frozen pizza.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
do you guys think it's safe to sand down the raised bits now or should I wait cause it might it cause flaking around the letters?
hmm maybe ill bake it since 30 mins isn't too long.. though i dunno if it even needs it. do i need to do it while it's still drying or is it ok if it wait?
-

I would wait a little longer. Then when you begin do it lightly and be cautious. If you notice it starting to flake then stop.

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
It doesn't matter on the sanding part. When I paint them, an hour later, I use a flat head screwdriver to scrape the paint off, and then I sand the rest off while it's not so hard. That way I don't have to sand so hard and worry about fubaring the paint on the rest of the valve cover. After you scape the unwanted paint off, bake it for 30 minutes, then let it dry, clear coat it, bake for 10 minutes and let it dry for 2 days. Do not touch it whatesover for 2 days!
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
I like that color, it should turn out great when you get finished.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
valve cover gaskets are cheap...like 8 bucks for a felpro one. Just get a new one, save the headaches for a later day.

get a honda one. but i used a felpro when i did my timing belt and so far it looks like i have a small leak.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
meh.. well i got the lines done.. sorta.. i dunno maybe i need more coarse sand paper cause the stuff i had wasnt taking up the paint too well. i used a dremel & wire wheel and it looks ok but some of the paint is still in the metal and it doesnt want to go away too much really.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/9225/p1010207qn0.jpg
and of course since im a n00b i mared the paint with both the wheel and the sand paper :rocket: so once it's totally dry i'll have to give it another coat and then do the raised part over again, though hopefully a razor blade will be enough to clear the lines with only one fresh coat. :sad2: otherwise i get to do it all over again :bandance::crying:

Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
looking at it i'll probably be able to touch it up well enough that it wont be worth doing over again.. i'll probably just clean up my other one (the one thats on the car now) and try again if i'm not happy :)
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
ok well i hit it with a few more coats and i think it'll be ok :D.. though i kinda like the way it looks with the lines painted so im undecided if i should risk cleaning them off again :nervous:
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
Use a flat head screwdriver and very carefully take the paint off while it's 1/2 wet. If you accidentally nick the paint, that's what the oven is for!
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
Get a sanding block. They're like $2.00 and you attach you sandpaper to it. It keeps the sandpaper flat so you can lay the block flat on the raised bits and it won't touch anything else. Plus you can use more area of sandpaper and it will come off much faster. Start with coarse sandpaper to take everything off, then once the paint is cleaned off, get a finer sandpaper to smooth it out or give it that "brushed" look.
It's definitely looking spanktacular though so far!
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
love what you did to the paper bags!
lmao! j/k looks good bro! cant wait to see it on the car!
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
hmm well right now i'm leaning toward no taking off the lines.. i kinda like it how it is.. it looks cleaner imo.. and if i dont like it i can always sand it off later.. hmm i dunno :dunno: sucks cause i kinda need to decide soon while the paint is still drying lol
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
Sand that shit off right now!
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
lmao ok.. i thought bout it more and yeah it needs to go.. otherwise it'll be a big brown/grey lump in my bay
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
i let the paint dry for a few days b-4 i sanded
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
sweet. that looks pretty good. i might have to go grab myself one of those things too.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
looks good man. if you're having trouble with sanding the raised parts use a block of wood or sanding block to wrap the sand paper onto and that will make it so it doesnt mess up the rest of the paint. lets see some installed pix when you're done.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
uh oh guys.. it looks like shit...

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/4678/p1010215rz0.jpg
hopefully will install it this weekend. gotta let the top coat dry.. though it's pretty hot outside so im sure it'll dry quickly
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
I used a sandblock. I bet it took forever sanding it. It looks like it's been BITESIZED, good work!:bong:
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"

lol yeah bout the time between when i said i would sand it and those pics haha.. bout 2 hours. im sure a woodblock would have been faster but a) i didnt trust anything but what i could keep and eye on and b) i didnt feel like going and getting one lol

-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
i will once i let the paint dry completely.. not like a few hours like you :kekeke:
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
mine was dry it was very hot today 110F*
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
yeah but it still takes time for the paint to set even it it's dry to the touch :) i want it to be fully done before i install it so i can minimize flaking :)
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
You don't want fingerprints too, wait till late tomorrow night and use latex gloves to put it on.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
yeah i went thru mad gloves already on this thing lol :D
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
I found it alot smoother to tape up the parts I didnt wanna paint and cut the tape with a razor blade then to sand it away-I always ended up accedently scratching the damn paint with sandpaper =(
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
yeah i think if i do it in the future i will investigate other methods since cleaning if afterward is a such a nerve racking process
and i didn't get a chance to put on the valve cover this weekend.. im gonna get a new gasket + sealant for it before i try :)
-

The key factor is to not over tighten it and be positive the surface is clean as hell.
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"
damn you guys got me all nervous.. how hard can it be :nervous:
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammered"

black would also look good though.. oh man now im not sure lol.. i think i mostly just need to get different spark plug wires cause the blue doesnt match anything. it used to match my intake stuff
-
Re: Painted my valve cover - "Gunmetal Hammed"
color matched would look awwsome and send CAH the aprk plug wires :-D
i have gray ones
