oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
hello everyone. im relatively new here, but figured instead of updating my newb intro thread id start a new one. this one is gonna have a fair amount of reading, some decent/poor pics, and basically is a place for me to log what im doing. so here we go!
i go the car september 22nd, 2009 on trade. i sold a guy my 91 mitsubishi 3000gt, and he gave me what i paid for it plus an 88 accord. pretty sweat deal. i needed a winter beater, thats why i took it. i was originally just gonna make it pass afety and then stop working on it, but strangely i dont think thats gonna happen anymore. iv really taken a liking to the car. its not safetied yet, but isnt too far off. heres a list of what iv done so far:
-cleaned up and rustproofed floor, rockers, and doors
-changed batter cable ends and got a new battery
-bought a starter, but havent installed yet
took out entire interior to clean floor, and cleaned interior up a bit while doing so
-took out all old speakers (radio was already out), and have boughten and in process of replacing speakers and cd/mp3 player
heres what i need to do (that i know of):
-fix door latch (previous owner busted in winter, can only open from inside now)
-patch/replace rear passengers tire (all other tires are good or decent enough)
-finish installing sound system
-install starter and see if it will run
so thats where im at now, ill throw a post up after this one with some pics. if you have any questions or pieces of advice id be happy to hear em.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
this is the part i wanted to post the most, im like a giddy school girl on this one  i was looking at options for a bodykit/sideskirts, cause i wanted to cover up the rockers. i cleaned them up and rockerguarded them and all, but id rather toss something over them. i was originally gonna go for the xenon lip kit for sale in the classfieds, but i recently bought a new starter and battery, and had to pay rent and tuition, so that was no longer possible :crying:. so, off i went to the local junkyard to find some sideskirts for cheap. i was originally looking for honda civic factory skirts, because i read a thread on here saying that they work pretty good. well, i got there and they had none. so i decided to look around and see if i could get creative. after about 2 hours of looking and half an hour of playing in the mud, i found these:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...d/PICT0055.jpg
i measured them when i was there, and even compared them up against an 88 accord coupe that was there. i figured that they were close enough, so i bought em. cost me all together 33 bucks for the pair :naughty:. i took em home, and mocked them up. here is what i saw:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...d/PICT0061.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...d/PICT0063.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...d/PICT0065.jpg
im pretty stoked. they should fit with minimal adjusting, or maybe even none. they fit nice just sitting against it. the only problem is that they are about a half inch short, but the end adjusts, so i think i should be able to make it work.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...d/PICT0064.jpg
ill stop delaying and tell you guys what they are off of. a 2002 nissan sentra. they are aftermarket, so im not exactly sure what to call them. when i take a better look ill let you guys know if i find a name or anything.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
I like those wheels...but have never seen bigger tires on a 3gee lol. I would put some lower profile tires on it, and take off those mexi fender trim, but besides that lower of course. :)

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
looks good man! like the rims and blingin fender trims
however i am a bit disipointed... your user name led me to thinking there would be pics of a hatchback =/

ha ha im doing most of that, but forgot to mention it. the fender trim is either coming off or getting painted, depending on what the fender trim looks like underneath. the rims are staying, i like them too, but will prob be getting better fitting tires and a clean up and paint. and for now with winter coming here soon ill prob only adjust the ride height a bit maybe, prob just 4x4 it through winter, and then in the summer im slamming it hard lol.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
Car is looking pretty good and post progress pics of the sideskirts! And yeah that fat tires have to go lol
-
Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
Yeah its looking good but it really needs lower profile tires. Other than that its looking good and I'm looking forward to seeing what your doing to it :)
-
Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
Very interesting in seeing how this skirt project pans out. Please keep us updated with progress. Welcome to the board too btw.
-
Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
Welcome...
Keep us updated on your progress
-
Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
thanks for the welcoming guys. ill definently keep you guys posted about the sideskirts. because this is a ghetto build i might just sand, primer and paint em, and then slap em on with the screw spots and urethane along the top line. prob not the best way, but for 33 bucks they are going on and staying on lol. but dont worry, ill try to make it look somewhat decent. ill also try to get a better camera for better pics of them.
today i had to go to work for ten hours, and after me and my bro put the new starter in. the car starts and runs! pretty happy bout that.
tomorrow i plan on putting the new rear speakers in and wiring the cd/mp3 player i bought in.
oh, and dont worry bout the tires. i might keep them on for winter, but come spring ill get more appropriate tires, as well as lower it. alot.

thanks... there is some stuff on this car some people may not like, and thats ok. when it safetied and a bit down the line i plan on painting the inside star part green and slamming it to the ground, and i know not everyones gonna agree with that either. basically, the car has become my fun toy. if someone takes a double look, its done its job. its not at that stage yet, but it will be... mwhahahahaa. so you guys feel free to tell me exactly what you like and dont like, i wanna hear both.
the rims are 14'', so that doesnt help making the tires seem like mudboggin tires. also, i have these rims i could toss on the car, but i havent decided yet, ill prob just stick with the ones on it and give them better tires.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
quick update - when cleaning the sideskirts up i found them stamped with a nissan symbol and part number, so im guessing they are factory of some sort / trim level. so here is the part number:
>PP+EPM - T15<SAEPP
76853 5MOOO <----- drivers side
76852 5MOOO <----- passengers side
also, i got the mp3/cd player wired up and in the car, and its all working fine. now i just gotta wire the sub and amp in and the sound system is done. but now im off to sand and paint the sideskirts.

thanks, the 15'' konig ones or the 14'' prime ones? lol ill prob keep the prime ones on for winter at least, but depending how it goes comes spring i might toss the konigs on.
-
Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
agreed. Keep the 14's for winter and put some proper sized Hakka's on them. ..then go Konig's (without question) for the summer months.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
quick update: sideskirts are painted and end pieces are trimmed to fit. took the crome fender skirts off, front fenders are fine but rear need some attention, more cosmetic than structure or anything. took off busted door latch and handle and will prob go to wrecker tomorrow to get a replacement one.
quick question, how do i properly take the lock out of the handle? i dont wanna bust anything doing it, but im gonna need to toss it into the new handle asembly so its all the same key. any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
-
Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
Once you have the handle off, there should be a clip that holds the whole lock cylinder in place. When I had my handles out, I took the lock cylinders apart and cleaned everything and lubed them with graphite. Worked great. Someone had jammed a plastic fork in both locks so I had to take them apart anyway.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
i went to the local auto yard again today and picked up a new drivers door handle assembly, as well as a se-i (i think) centre console, the one that connects up to the dash and has the drink holder and extra compartment. for both the console and door handle i payed 22 bucks all together. not too bad i think. I already installed the console, which is the matching factory color to the rest of my interior. i only grabbed the front half cause i wanted the extra compartment and cup holders, and i left the back arm rest piece. it was a little warn, and i didnt really like the look of it as much as how it is now. the door latches i got the key locks swapped, so im going to install the new one later tonight.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
well, the honda is out of my garge... for now. i got it running and a few other things done (new console, starter, new door handle, stereo, etc.) but today my dad came and got it. my garage is really small and not heated, and its getting too cold to be able to do anything here effectively. so i sent it out to his place, where there is a double car heated garage. basically when he gets the chance hes gonna get it running smoothly, change the brakes (took it for a drive today for first time, realized it needs at least new pads), clean up the rear wheel arches and install the sideskirts, and any odds and ends that need done. then its going for safety. i will prob be out on weekends that i get off to help out and work on it as well. hopefully it will be safetied within the month (its getting cold here), but i cant rush a guy whos working for free lol. so here are a few final pics i took before it left my place.
sideskirts mocked up: i like them because they add a bit to the car, but are subtle. i wanted skirts but wanted them to look decently stock, and i think they should work out. they should look even better when i get rid of the monster truck tires and 4x4 stance :ugh:

thats all for now

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
Side skirts look good, almost stock. With a front and rear lip, I think that the car would be really good looking.

DAmn!!! thoes look perfect man

thanks. the rear bumper kinda has a factory lip looking edge to it, so lowered i might be able to get away with just that... but the front definetly needs a lip

and to answer your question, yes. lots. and gravel. and the roads suck. lol

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
figured out the exact model the skirts came from:
http://i663.photobucket.com/albums/u...T0039Small.jpg
2002 Nissan Sentra Spec V SE-R
so they are stock, so your autoyard might have a pair if you want em, just have to find that trim level, thats all

thats cool, im the same age as my 88. its too bad to hear about the other manitoban owners, but at least i found one other owner that is somewhat local. I saw that there were a few canadian owners on here, but its nice to see at least one other one from Manitoba.

Re: oldschoolhatch's build - 88 accord
good find with the skirts. a se-r still might be harder to come by in a junkyard, i know there are plenty of them , but they seem to be a popular car around here like mustangs

true, the one i got the skirts off of was the only se-r model at the yard. i was lucky to come across it too, cause i was mostly looking in the part of the yard that had the 80s early 90s imports in it. the se-r was on the outside of a row along the way, thats the only reason i noticed it.
