honeslty. did what i did. Remote mount power steering. I just looped the lines and added a resivor and waaaalaa rack has oil at all times and no more leaks. YET i never had a problem with my power steering in the first place
If you dont need the room for modifications then i say fix it! I beleive that IF you have a STREET CAR/DAILY DRIVER then it should be easy to drive with all the accesories and bells and whistles. On the other hand if its a RACE/WEEKEND cruiser then it really dont matter.
I like my power steering, every time I get in a Civic I think about how much nicer mine is in parking lots etc. But if that shit breaks it's coming out, it's not that nice.
I personally prefer the cookie
I think I still have a high pressure ps hose if you want it. $15 shipped?
I'm with A18A I want the cookie too!!!
Would you be going to rack and pinion or whatever?
You in need of space? If not, i say keep it. You need an option to keep it and get a cookie...
I am designing a plate that bolts in place of the valve body that loops, seals, and demobilizes the offset pinion holder...
Keep it working, it's a touch of class.
UNLESS you repalce the rack with a proper manual type or closest thing to one that isnt a total duct tape popscile stick rig up.
Rip it out tim.
might as well fix it, it's nice to have for parking, it's one of the first progressive power steering systems made, well at least the first one to actually work. once you are above 15, the high pressure fluid is diverted away from the rack anyway and just circulates
lol wuts really funny is i have a lifetime warranty on the high pressure line from napa but its a pain replacing it...
its a tie! i think ill fix it and if it goes out again ill just say fuck it...
Dont fix it...rip it out. I will persuade you this weekend. Got my engine stand tonight. :)
Power steering. Bah! Humbug!
Oooh, I want to see that. Wonder if it would even work on my 2g 'lude? I suppose I should get down there and see if I can tighten up the rack while the rest of the car is still ripped apart. One of my coilovers is leaking too damn it. :thumbdn:
I think I need a cookie also.

lulz. ive been driving around since july w/o ps CAH so get off my nutz!
but i pulled the pump/pully off cuz i got tired of it getting my engine bay dirty... soooo no more ps(for now).
edit:
LX-incredible, wut is that?
sigh, if only the schools in america taught reading comprehension.
:werd:
That's just the cookie...
I don't know where my service manual is, but doesn't the rack use hydraulic pistons to move back and forth, taking that force away from the teeth of the rack and pinion? I'd put money down that the rack will loosen up and get sloppy over time without the hydraulic assist.
Yes, they do use a piston. I worry about the wear as much as with a manual rack. Pretty much the same design as far as the rack and pinion go. Only difference is that the pinion moves left and right to actuate the assist. If the the pinion offset holder wasn't secured there might be a problem.
Like the manual, the power racks also have an adjustment to bring the rack closer to the pinion if need be.
i read that, i dont understand what gains you get from doing that...
Minimal restriction, as fluid no longer passes through the valve body. No slop, as the offset pinion holder is demobilized. Simplified connections. No cutting or teeing of lines. A single 1/4" NPT port on the side can either be plugged or used to connect a reservoir.
oh really now... hmmmmm
Yesssss... I'm actually speaking out of my ass. It makes much more sense to have slop in the steering and nigrig something for the 4 lines that come out of the valve body (which provides no resistance whatsoever). Same goes for cutting a huge hole in the distributor and the cap, relocating the ignitor and grinding the thermostat housing... Much better than spending what could've gone to dem ballin' azz rimz or dat phat system.
Fuck man, I can cut and weld the brackets and install a manual rack in a day or two. I don't have anything to gain from this. It's an option for those without that ability or who can't deal with that extra 1/2 turn of the wheel... If it pains you so much to see the correct way to go about things I'll delete my posts and start something elsewhere.
