cant pass smog... info inside
ok my friends 3g isnt passing smog and the ecu is continuously flashing.. he told me what the smog (emissions test) told him and this is what he got
at 15mph %co2 = 13.5 %02 = .2
at 25mph %co2 = 14.1 %02 = .0
HC (PPM)
at 15mph max=124 meas=157
at 25mph max=98 meas=96
CO(%)
at 15mph max=.78 meas=2.29
at 25mph max=.66 meas=1.51
NO(PPM)
at 15mph max=815 meas=711
at 25mph max=754 meas=383
so i wanna know... what does all this mean? is it good or bad? and what can i do to make it pass california emissions laws

Re: cant pass smog... info inside
Based upon my experience from failing an emission inspection a couple of years ago and what I know about the control devices here is a set of possibilities.
High HC is most likely O2 sensors needing replacement while high CO would indicate a bad catalytic converter. The EGR system reduces NOx emissions and it looks like you are OK there.
My inspection showed high HC, but I had no check engine light. The sensors can be bad when they start to respond more slowly to O2 changes without being bad enough to trip the engine light. I would try replacing those first, throw a can of Berryman's Chemtool in with a fill up, and drive the car for a few days. You should pass HC. The CO may come down to normal, but if it's still high you may need a new cat as well.

ok... will try this.. thanx....
Re: cant pass smog... info inside
here's the video of my ecu
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...h_DSCN0209.jpg
it flashes 12 times and i ran out of memory
Re: cant pass smog... info inside
looks like error code 1 to me (O2 sensor)
Re: cant pass smog... info inside
even after the camera went off it just kept on flashing and didn't stop....
Re: cant pass smog... info inside
well it looks like error code 1 to me because it's a long pause between them, meaning it's gonna tell you the error code again. do you get that when you first start the engine when it's cold? if not, then yeah i'm betting it's the o2 sensor
Re: cant pass smog... info inside
well i dont start it... i just turn the key all the way on where all the lights turn on and thats wat it does

k well im gonna have to do it tomorrow..... or friday gotta wait till i get paid
Re: cant pass smog... info inside
You can try and take them out and clean them off with a propane torch. I would also make sure the wires are hooked up and not frayed any where.

Re: cant pass smog... info inside
As old as they are I would just replace them. I don't know enough about the pre-89 LXi's. I think the ones before 89 had the older style exhaust manifold that only has one O2 sensor. If you have two, replace them both. If you can afford it go with an OEM equivalent and not a "universal." Don't mess with cleaning, they are ready for the trash can.
