There was one in Gran Turismo 4, so it would almost be certain they would carry it through the rest of the series. They knew the coupe was better. ;)

yeah nz new hatchbacks are over here. they are EDM style so i guess some edm countries get them also

It could be an '86...did New Zealand get the third-gen Accord a year late? I know Japan got them in '85. Also, the body-style didn't throw you off? ;)
It did look weird, and I did question it (being a hatchy owner, myself), but, again, I passed it off b/c of the front-end.
Third-gen hatches, aerodecks, and coupes never got that front end. Only the sedans did. Also, the EDM second-gen's front end is almost the same as the USDM version - just the headlights and core support are different for the most part, I think.
