1989 Honda Accord LX-i Hatch, 5-speed
Hey everybody, I've got a 1989 accord lx-i, engine recently started overheating and 5th gear is out. I mainly drive just around our small town so 5th gear being out hasn't been a huge issue, but I'd like to fix it here soon. Any tips on the best course of action? Could I find somewhere to repair the trans or would finding a used trans be better? I've been searching for quite some time now and these transmissions may as well be ghosts at this point. would it maybe be better to engine swap it with something with a little more power that I can find an engine/transaxle together? I'd appreciate any help really, even if it's just pointers on what to do or where to look next. Thanks everybody!

Pretty sure this guy has a 5 speed. The 5th gear cluster is replaceable with out rebuilding the entire trans. there should be some threads on it here.
The over heating you'll have to go thru all the coolant parts and see whats happened with age.

If you are overheating you should be very wary of your head gasket. I would say replace it before you replace the radiator because the stock radiators will pop the seals around the tanks and leak from the pressure. Go ahead and do your coolant lines, give her fresh coolant, and put a 185F thermostat in it. If you want a good aftermarket radiator that will keep the engine ice cold, get a skunk2 349-05-1000, it fits with a bit of finagling.
