replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
Ok after spending days at the junkyard, looking at dozens of Hondas, critters under dashboards, and one small rattlesnake, I have found that the throttle cable from a 95 Acura 2.5 TL will work on carburated cars, of course the factory one is discontinued, no aftermarket is available, and if you break one, you are SOL, other then the yard, Most of the cables I found were too short, being that the throttle body is usually close to the firewall, it works from the Acura, because the engine isn't horizontally mounted, and requires a longer cable, the civic cables were a no go, as they have a round end where the pedal attaches, the Acura has a nearly identical locking cable retainer, just like the Accords, as far as the cable ends, the carburetor end is identical, and the adjuster is identical, the only difference is the Acura cable is about 3/4 of an inch longer on the carb end, I set my carb linkages with a factory cable, and I had enough adjustment to make it work, on a stock carb, the worst you may have to do, is modify the cable mounting at the carb, to move it back slightly, and fabricate a couple of clamps to mount the cable where it goes through the engine bay, the plastic lock at the firewall is identical on both the Accord and the Acura, it locks onto the firewall just like a stock part. I will get some pictures up, just as soon as I can find my camera cable

adjuster end, I designed this with a factory cable, so it should work on a stock carb, definitely on a weber conversion

clamp that comes with it, I may be able to use this somehow

this is the issue with the original firewall mount, the Acura one looks a lot stronger

Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
can someone sticky this please? hopefully this will help someone with a broken cable, I think 2g cables work as well, but you run into the same issue finding them as 3 g cables
Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
Good find! Perseverance paid off once again.
Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
2g cable won't work without some work on the stock carb bracket. The actual steel cable that exits the black part is too short to reach the throttle mechanism.

i figured those are even harder to find then a three g cable anyway, This should fit a stock carb, if the cable is too long between the adjuster and the stop, then some minor modification to the three G bracket might be needed to move the adjuster backwards, I will need to find a stock carb and see, It looks like about 3/4 of an inch of extra cable, but I think the adjuster can take up the slack, A stock cable works on mine, so this should work on a stock carb,

I had to flatten and redrill a new hole on the bracket for the cable to fit because it's too short. Not an issue if you're a fabricator

I figured the Acura cable might be a lot easier to find then a used factory cable, I called every place I could think of, had a bunch of the vintage parts guys looking for one, no luck, the only ones they ever found were broken like my stock one.
Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
From your picture in the other thread, it appears that the plastic ferrel extending from the firewall cracks. If this is what happens, how hard would it be to epoxy that back together or reinforce it with a length of hose and some pipe clamps or otherwise jury rig it back together? Obviously, a new throttle cable would be superior, but for others who can't fabricate or don't want to buy a different throttle cable, would a repair of the broken cable work?

I tried fixing a few broken ones like it, and nothing worked, the Acura one looks like it has added reinforcing to the sides of the plastic piece, probably to stop the same thing from happening I would be concerned about trying to repair one, if the cable should bind, it would be a mess. This a pretty easy swap, these throttle cables are really hard to find now in good shape, I would would imagine in a few years they are going to be next to impossible to find, this should be an option a lot easier to find, Can anyone look up the part number on this cable, and see if it cross references to anything else?

You got a part number for what year TL, that ought to be available from Honda as well ?

I can try to look it up in a little bit about to go and get some groceries for eats :D
Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
it's discontinued too, what is it with Honda and throttle cables? they are trying to force cars to be obsolete I guess, part number is 17910-SW5-A01 will still be easier to find then the factory one chances are at least someone has some in stock EDIT I did a quick search and they are around, as places still have them in stock, so not a lost cause like the factory one, while my wife was in the hospital, I called something like 300 dealerships, regular ones, and ones that carry older parts, and not one had a factory cable
Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
Cool, great research all the same.
Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
Thanks for looking out for us carb guy's
Re: replacement cable equivilent for the carb throttle cable
I used my trunk cable once in a pinch. I forgot what i did to get it to work.
