Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I started this so the new guys can ask newbie questions here, We have a search, but it can be intimidating for a new person, ask your newbie questions here, and someone will direct you to the proper thread, or try to answer them here. I started this as a help to the new guys, make sure you post in the introductions forum, then if you have a question about things such as engine swaps, etc, we can help you to the correct thread. Maybe this will cut down on the new threads started, that only have the question, and then 30 replies of SEARCH!! I know it's not always easy being the new guy. :D

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
i asked, other than mounts, what all is required to put a B16/B18 into a carb'd 3GEE? like, do ya gotta do an A20 EFI swap first (gas tank, etc) or can ya just start doin it. what axles can ya use, etc.
the forum kinda lists what to do if ur already EFI, but not for the carb'd guys...
ya ya i know, 'SEARCH' will prolly be my responce, but isnt that the point of this thread?

you will probably need to do a lot of the same stuff you would have to do to change to Fi, you need the FI tank and pump, plus all the lines to start, none of the carb system is suitable for the pressure. all the FI stuff should bolt right in, you can always upgrade the pump later once all the fuel stuff is in

what about axles and a harness, whats the best way to approach those?

you will probably have to make a harness or a hybrid harness, I'm not sure if anyone has ever done this, you have to take one step at a time

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I guess this belongs here. So, the idle speed on my LX-i is normal at lower speeds with no check engine light. But once I get on the freeway, the check engine light shows up and my idle speed rises up to or over 1200 RPM warm. I think that it is important to include that my car was sitting for a long time until recently and hasn't had its oil changed in like 2 years (I know... but my dad changes oil every 6k and it hasn't hit that mark yet). My uncle thinks it's the EGR valve causing the problem, but I will get it checked back when I get my car back from the paint shop. But I'm just curious what you guys think it'd be. Any help is appreciated.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
pull over and check the code on the ecu. then get back to us.
itzdave, you would think it would be easier to just swap in the entire ecu/engine harness. Then figure out the speedo and tach.
bullards b20 had some monstrosity of harnesses which made it hard to figure out. I think it was a Prelude engine harness and accord cabin harness. with a bunch of re-wiring.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Why do the front bumpers (USDM, not sure about others) have four holes in them, when both the license place and bracket only go into the same two? What are the two extra holes for?

ok it took me a week to remember what it was, so here it is.
If I wanted to convert a Lxi to carb, even if not just temporarily..:bong: can I use the Lxi fuel tank, pump, and wocket sockets?
..and Tim you got a sticky!

Can't use the LXi pump. 40-60psi is probably a bit too much for your float valve. Tank will probably be just fine. I don't know what a wocket socket is though. :ugh:

ABS and PGM-FI lights. The third has me stumped. Carbed cars have Check Engine lights right?

The check-engine light is the PGM-FI light, and carb'd cars don't have them. Does your SE-i have the ABS light?
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I was under the impression EDM/NZDM/JDM cars had both PGM-FI and Check engine lights. No, mine doesn't have ABS light.

So, I am starting the tear down of my 81 Accord. I have been taking pictures and referbing everything as I go. I hit the Threads for advice as needed. But where is the appropriate section to post pics and keep a log and everyone up to date on my journey. Would like some feed back on the build.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Check engine light and pgm-fi light is the same thing. I only have one blank, the one furthest to the left. The rest are cel, battery, oil, e-brake, emergency blinkers, cruise control and alb.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I found pictures of the ALB light on the far right (SE-i's don't have ALB...?), but what's the far left blank for?
O_o
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Nope SE-is don't have ALB. They have 4 wheel disc but not anti-lock. ALB came on EDM and JDM cars, i think the 2.0Si Exclusives? not sure tho...

Still not sure, but I found some OEM bumper hole fillers at the junkyard the other day, had no clue they made those for our cars.

They guy with the mint $800 SE-i on here from Canada has them.

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Why do some cars have steering wheels with four-button horns, while some have one-piece horns? (Year dependent?)
Why do some cars have gas/oil gauges that point outward, while some have gauges that point inward? (Year dependent?)
Why doesn't anyone on here have a black SE-i sedan?
:)

re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
those blank lights isn the gauges would be the cat light, pgm-fi/check engine light, alb & door lock. thats what they where on my car anyway :)

the bumper just has rivnuts to hold the plate on, some countries just have different spacing on the bolt holes on the plate is all, they go on one set of holes for one country, other set for different places

Yay for a18 answering your question! As for heat and gas, the 86-87 ones point in, 88-89 ones point out. Horn is probably the same, but I have never noticed.

Is there a compilation of all differences in trim levels?
Which ones had options for power windows/locks etc?

Coupe and sedan DX models are Manuel
Coupes=Lx,LX-i,Se-i has power windows with no power locks
Sedans= Lx,Lx-i, and Se-i came with power locks and windows

and neither the coupes or hatchbacks have power door locks, the sedans have a notch in the door beam that allows the lock motor to fit, the others don't. it will bolt to the door latch, but it won't fit. you can convert pretty easy with aftermarket actuators.

DX - manual everything.
LX/LX-i/SE-i - power everything (except for door locks for coupes and hatches).
Hatch: DX, LX-i
Coupe: DX, LX-i, SE-i
Sedan: DX, LX, LX-i, SE-i
Hatches and coupes never came in LX's, and hatches never came in SE-i's.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
The "i" in LX-i and SE-i indicate a fuel-injected engine. In general, the carbs seem to get a little better MPG than injected models, but the injected models are more reliable. You want an injected model definitely.

there were two different gauge makers, and I believe any of the cars could have gotten eithier gauge, I guess it depended on the plant it was built at.

lowering it would help handling as the front end would become like a snow plow lol... seriously our 97 coupe handled fantastic in snow due to being pretty low and having good tires on it... used to drive in front of the plows all the time lol...

Carb cars are geared for fuel economy. they are also lighter. and run a bit more lean.

Yeah, I don't have anything empirical. I was just going from anecdotal reports from our carb guys here. It seems like those carb cars top out somewhere around 40 MPG, whereas the best the FI cars can do is somewhere around 35 MPG. I think they geared the carb cars a little higher, so that might explain it. The only empirical evidence I was able to find were the ratings from www.fueleconomy.gov:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/compx...Field=Findacar
It's not a big difference, but the carbs are a little higher.

it's easy, the FI cars produce more horsepower, therefor use more gas,
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
^ Not necessarily. I've gotten close to 50mpg highway in my car, but mixed driving (city/highway and easy/hard) I get 35mpg.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I thought the carb transmissions were shorter geared due to the lack of HP.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
is there such thing as an EX 3gee
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
I don't think so. I think Canada just had the S/LX* EX-i SE-i.
* I'm confused by the S/LX ordeal. Their LX is definitely our DX, but their S is also their LX...?
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
How rare are those add-on armrests? You know the 2 piece console with the armrest attachement.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
^ The factory armrest is in every single SE-i ever made. Some LX-i's have them since they were options from the factory. A some LX-i's, LX's, and DX's have the nasty dealer armrest. SE-i's have them with leather and in black or tan. The other models have them in a range of colors, usually with cloth, sometimes with leather. All depends on year, trim, and country of origin.
Also, the front half isn't rare: Some LX's, all LX-i's and all SE-i's have the front console with an insert. All SE-i's have cup holders, while LX-i's had the option for them but had the cassette holder standard. LX's had the cassette holder as an option. The cup holders are rare.
edit: I think you're asking about the dealer-installed bolt-over armrest. They are about as common as the factory armrests (not including SE-i's), but can be found in more colors since you could get them in any trim (DX, LX, LX-i).
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Thanks. I did mean the bolt ons. Found one at the j/y but its gross, guess I'll wait for another one to show up if they arent super rare.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
What color is it? Some are rare, someone might want it. What color are you looking for?
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
Its gray I believe, but its broken, the top is off [actual armrest part] and i didnt even look for it :dunno:. It might still be in the car under all the crap in the backseat. The color would need to be matched to my 2g anyway but I guess brown or even maroon would put it close.
-
re: Have a quick question? Ask it here!
the bolt over armrest is actually pretty rare in a lot of areas, you are talking about the one that opens? if you see one and want it, let me know i can fix it

Do all 3geez that came with steelies from the factory have two different styles of steel wheels (left/right)? Three of my coupes had steelies with circle holes on the left, and rectangular holes on the right, like this:

Sup everyone, new to the site and the reason I just purchased a 1989 Accord DX 123K love it, runs like a champ! My only question how difficult/expensive is it to add a/c to one where it was not installed from factory? Not a big deal, just curious, also, does my car have power steering? If so, its out as well, how difficult is that to replace. I did a search for the a/c question, no luck, but didn't about the power steering, i get a squeal think its out but don't even know if it was availbale on it. Looking forward to chatting and getting to know everyone better! thanks in advance for the replies... :)
