PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
i am bout to get cracking on making my adapter plate so that i cam mount my b18a cable tranny to my a20a motor. this is being inspired by jason budds turbo 9 sec a20a/b18a combo. we realy dont have to many details on how he did his, but we can work with the pictures ect. i am def going to need some help from the other members with stuff like CAD drawings. i was checking out www.emachineshop.com and was thinking that i could try to just them to get some parts made. i will def shop around on priceses first.
i need some help on deciding what materials to use. at first i was palning on making it out is a steal plate. but then i seen the price of steal, the weight and thought how hard it would be to work with. so i think i am going to go with aluminum. do yall think aluminum is strong enough to hold? i was thanking of getting a 2.5x2.5 3/4" think sheet to start off with. ill get the exact measurement of the mating surhace to make use that not to small. but what do yall think on the thickness. is 3/4" to thick or to thin
the first thing i am going to need help on is making the adapter that going to go inbetween the b series flywheel and the a series crank. seeing that i have both cranks and flywheels in my basement i can check to see how similar the bolt patterns are. if they are exactly the same then i would just need a CAD drawing of the bolt pattern that is the circular curcumfrance of the crank end, that is also 3/4" (or what ever we decide) thick. we also need to debate is this going to throw off balancing. i am going to take some flywheel bolts to a specialty bolt place to see if i can get time 3/4" longer to making up for the extra space of the crank spacer.
here is a pic of jasons budds spacer. not sure if its actually fused onto the end of the crank

if you have any important info/suggestions please peak up, and ill update them on this first page

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
6061 should be ample enough for that adapter plate

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
so yeaterday i pulled the tranny apart. it was pretty clean on the inside. none of the gears where striped or anything/ i pulled the whole gear assemplys out and washed the cases. once i look up what gears i want to use for my turbo setup ill start putting it back together. scraping up the money to grab a obx lsd ( we now know how to fix the known problems with these). since the tranny is apart it makes it a million times esier to mock up for the adapter plate. i am going to have my block and tranny powdercoated black, might even do the tranny case myself. i made the face of the b18 tranny out or cardboard and ill to the fave of the a20 block today and post pics later

wow dude that is a hell of a project, I wouldn't even know where to start. As for the gearing, I would run the LS integra or b18a/b gears. They are the widest of all the b-series gearing and great for turbo applications.

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
yeah, well its a b18a tranny and all the gears look great. when i cleaned out the tranny case on the lil magnet on the bottom is had very few small shavings but no chunks or anything. and the gears look as if they where never grinded.

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
This motor is going to be an anchor. The cast-iron block of the A20 coupled with the heavy transmission of the Bseries sounds pretty heavy to me. The A20 transmission is much smaller and I would think by doing the 1st gen Integra gear swap would yield just as good results with less amount of work.

Do they make an LSD for the first gen teg internals?

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
well. i was reading the jason budd post where he was saying his a20 trannys where prob to blowing up. i dident want to deal with that. plus my stock tranny was auto, i am converting to 5spd. i already had a b18a tranny laying around, minds well put it to use. plus with the b series tranny i can use the obx lsd. and on top od that i can use the b series short shifters, shifter bearing, light weight flywheels and clutches. it does have alot od advantages. not to mention stage 3 axles

well, the only reason jason kept blowing A series trans was because he was pushing a lot of power. I believe he was close to 600 or over 600 hp easy.
you are not going to push that much power. people on this board had their cars up to 30psi with stock tranny and it held up just fine. i think you are waisting your time and money. if i was you i would get carbed tranny since it has a little longer gear ratio.
as far as short shifters, there are short shifters for our accords.
i wouldn't use light weight flywheel. you don't want RPM drop too quickly when you shift. stock flywheel should be just fine.
just build up the motor to handle some power and tune the shit out of it.
as far as axels go, you can get them custom made.

Agreed, just seems like a lot of work for nothing. You could turn around and sell that LS tranny for like $250 and put it towards something else.
Rob is using an LSD from a B-series in his b20 trans, so I am sure something would fit in the A20 trans.

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
with proper tunning stock engine can handle a lot more than 12 psi. Sean had GM ignition system and he was running close to 20 psi on stock bottom end.
it is all about tunning.

well, i am still doing it anyways............................ just because i want to.

i dont think our trannys can withstand 600hp if we constantly bag on it, but even then, how many of us had that much power to play with from an A20?
the stock tranny should be useable to a point where we shouldnt have to change it until we went for a track day.
how much does a stock B series flywheel weigh? my guess is if its close to what ours weigh when its lightened, then it might be more worthwhile to use a B series flywheel instead with an adapter piece. the reason i say this is cause its alot easier to find a beefy clutch for a B series then it is an A series.
how much, and where can i get custom axles made?

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
unless youre planning on running 10s the stock tranny should be strong enough, Jason budd and Johnny O had problems when they were running low 10s when they started going thru trannies.

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
I thought you could get LSD with the B18? Isn't that what some of you guys wanted?

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
just got a message back form jason bud, the plate is 1/2' aluminum and he getting me the info on where he got his crank space. the guy sold him a prototype is form quartersports

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
good luck with a project i hope you get it done and have no problems running with it.

Re: PROJECT: A20A to B18A Tranny Adapter Plate
the crank space you can get them off auto a20a3 i have like two of them laying some where i would half to look for them
