89 Sedan New Panels and Painting

So, a while back (March) my '89 Sedan was in an accident and my fender and door were damaged. I quickly bought another car to use for parts and replaced the fender and door with the ones off the white car. Here are a few photos to show the progress of the car as myself and my uncle painted the white portions to match the car. We ended up painting the whole side of the car to hopefully make the paint match better, the colour of the car is R-61M Chateau Red metallic. Overall this was a good experience since I didn't know much about bodywork before, and I believe the result is not too bad considering it was painted by a couple amateurs in a dirty garage!

Here's the car as it sat before we started.

Sanding and bodywork (rear fender arch) done.

Primer-sealer. The white door was primed off the car and then hung to be painted.

    Three coats of red.

    First coat of clear.

    End result!

This is the car after the rest of the panels had been treated with Meguiar's Ultimate Rubbing Compound, I believe this helped the new paint match better with the rest of the car.

Overall this was a very time consuming job which kept the car in the shop for a week. However the results were quite satisfactory especially for the cheap price that I paid. There is very little orange peel on the car, the surfaces of the doors appear to have a thinner coat than the rest of the car and they have a little orange peel effect.

Also, when the rear bumper was removed I found that the mounts were completely disintegrated from rust. The inner bumper was perfect towards the middle of the car, but rusted away nearly to nothing near the edges where the mounts fit into the holes in the unibody. I literally had to scrape the old mounts out, they came out as dust. The undercoating must not have been reaching these mounts effectively. We fabricated new ones out of 2x2 square steel tubing and welded them to what good metal was left on the bumper rebar. Hopefully this is going to last.

Overall I think this project was a success and I'm happy that my 3G is all one colour again!

That's nice work. The color is a good match, the paint beads up water nicely and nice work on the bumper save!
