I just picked up an 88 accord lx. It has the original a20a1 in it w 290xxx miles on it.
The transmission is bad so I was going to replace both engine and tranny.
What is a good reliable and reasonably priced swap?

For reliable and reasonably priced, look for a lower mileage A20A1 and trans. You could also use an A20A3 and swap over the intake manifold and carb.

Anything else will cost quite a bit more and require custom work.
