are the tailights of the 86/87 model the same as the 88/89 on the lx-i's?

Nope. The outer ones might bolt up (same size and all) but they are still a bit different when you look at them. The inner ones are smaller on the 86-87's than on the 88-89's. You can always swap the whole lightbar thingy on the trunklid (for lack of a better description, lol) to make everything fit and look right if you're converting.

I like the 88-89 taillights the best

Yah the outside tails will swapwith no problems, my dad had an 86-87 light on his 88 accord and he didnt even know until i pointed it out to him lol! But if you are going to swap over to 88-89 lights or to 86-87 lights you will need the trunklid from the same car because the middle piece will not bolt right up. I already tried and compared em.
