    Axle or differential problem

Working on a carb 1988 Honda accord. Driver says the vehicle will make a very bad grinding noise above a certain speed ~40mph until he pushes the clutch in and it will generally sort itself out. Also says that when the wheel is turned all the way in one direction it will make a very bad grinding noise if you try to move the car. I have removed both axles and have noticed that the drivers side axle spline does appear to have some grinding on the outside surface because the passenger side still has what looks like original lathing marks on the spline. I'm wondering if this is one of the gears possible moving around inside of the differential or if it could be axle related. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds more like a wheel bearing or throw out bearing. Or maybe the flywheel cover is rubbing on the axel. Idk sounds weird but those are my guesses.

I would change the oil in the transmission. If bits of gears fall out you will know the problem is internal. I would recommend changing out the oil with Honda MTF. its the best for these transmissions.

    Re: Axle or differential problem

I had a grind /whirring noise out of my left wheel fir over a year. New drive shaft didn't help. I also screwed the install and ended up having to open and put differential back Into place in the tranny.

Noise kept going until I began to suspect wheel bearing. Got to a point where it got so much worse that I got scared and jacked the car up. Checked for play in the wheel only to find it flopping all over. Bearing fell apart when I started pushing the hub out, the races had separated from the bearing housing a while ago...

If the clutch is super old, the throw out bearing could also be crap and fell apart too. I did my clutch last year and found one of the tabs responsible for holding it to be broken. They're really thin, so didn't surprise me. Didn't make noise though

Throwout bearing I'd guess. They can make some interesting noises when they're on the edge of buying the farm.

    Re: Axle or differential problem

A throw out bearing problem would not be related to vehicle speed but to engine speed. Pushing the clutch would even increase the problem.

If the problem occurs at ~40mph, it's probably something related to the output portion of the drive train. Pushing the clutch will decrease your speed, sorting out the problem. Inspect the wheel bearings for free play.
