    advancing carb ignition timing

ok i want to advance my timing just a little bit so i can still run 87 octane gas, also if i advance it just a little i don have to plug the vaccum advance while i do it right? just unbolt the distruibuter and turn it a little counter close wise? or is it clock wise?

    thanx

when setting base ignition timing you remove the vacuujm lines and plug the hard lines @ the rack not @ the distributor.
setting base timing first with a timing light is best. make a mark from the distributor to the head with a sharp edge of a screw driver.
Then you turn the distributor 3mm - 5mm couter-clockwise from the base setting. and make another mark

I wouldn't recommend adjusting the timing without a light. You just don't know how far you're advancing it otherwise. Try and borrow or rent one. The vacuum advance is plugged off when setting the timing. After it's set, it's reconnected. If you overadvance the timing, you'll lose power, the engine will be prone to overheating, and you risk damage from preignition/detonation.

how will you lose power if you advance it too far? and is only too far if you hear the pinging? because mine is advanced pretty far and seems fine.

You will lose power as the rpms increase... it also diminishes top speed.
I went to tracks and ran 3 times and got worse 1/4 mile trap speed with more advance, but better 1/8th mile times.
